Sports Brucefield teen heading south for fishing championship Jennifer, Hubbard Ryan Finnie is hooked on fishing. As the rest of Huron County prepares for winter, the 14 -year-old Brucefield resident is making plans to head south of the border for the Junior Bassmaster World Championship fishing tournament. Held in Birmingham, Ala., the February tournament will be the highlight of an impressive fishing season for Finnie. In order to qualify for the three- day world tournament, junior participants tally points earned through tournaments, - annual fishing biographies and a conservation project. "I'm pretty excited about it," said Finnie, a Grade 9 student at CHSS. "The first day we get to go out with the pros to get some tips, and then we're on our own." Sponsored by London's Angling Sport, Finnie won two of three tournaments (Sparrow Lake and Gloucester Pool) in the 2006 season and finished second at the third (Bass Lake). "I did really well at Sparrow Lake. There was only one other kid who caught a fish. He was at 1.6 pounds for one and I was at 9.85 with four," he said. "At Gloucester everyone had a rough day. I only caught two fish and they weren't very big." Fish must be a least 12 -inches long to qualify in the Bassmaster tournaments. At Bass Lake, Finnie caught three fish, to claim second. Despite being the front-runner in points after the tournaments, Finnie also was required to complete and document a conservation project. "I put structure — old Christmas trees in Waterhouse Lake up north to protect the young bass from their predators and allow them to grow," he explained. Finnie expects to face competitors from throughout North America at the world tourney. The top angler will win a $5,000 scholarship to any Canadian or U.S. college or university. See FINNIE, Page 22
