Water response team warns of low levels
While September seemed
like a rainy month, the
Ausable Bayfield Water
Response Team (WRT) says
a Level 1 Low Water
Advisory remains in effect
for the Upper Ausable and
Bayfield River watersheds.
Three-month precipitation
indicators continue to
remain outside of an adviso-
ry condition.
The try September experi-
enced in the northern . areas
of the watershed has been
offset by near-normal rain-
fall amounts in the previous
months.
"Though it seemed like we
experienced a lot of rainy
days during the second half
of September, total amounts
were generally low," said.
Alec Scott, water and plan-
ning manager with the
Ausable Bayfield
Conservation Authority.
The drier ground condi-
tions from August absorbed
much of the precipitation:
Some positive response in
stream flow has been
'observed near the end of
September, but improve-
ments have been minimal.
Stream flows remain low
in the Bayfield River and
Upper Ausable River
watersheds. September
flows for both watersheds
were less than 25 per cent of
the normal monthly flows.
No advisories are in effect
for the Lower Ausable
River subwatershed (includ-
ing Parkhill Creek), accord-
ing to the WRT.
However, despite having
received near-normal rain-
fall amounts during the pre-
vious three months, stream -
flows in these areas are still
below normal as of the end
of September.
"While September seemed
to be a wet month, there
were a lot of cloudy days
with small amounts of pre-
cipitation. While this kept
the ground surface wet,
there was not enough heavy
precipitation to result in
sustained increases in
stream flows," according to
Scott.
"Continued low stream
flows make voluntary water
conservation efforts very
important and we encourage
everyone to join in those
efforts."
The wet start to October
has provided some relief to
stream flows throughout the
watershed.
However, total amounts of
precipitation in the north-
ern regions have still been
less than amounts received
in the south.
This follows the trend
experienced through the last
several months where the
