Seaforth kids experience new fire safety hous

While many children will never
have to find their way through a
smoke-filled house to a safe exit, a
new fire safety house is allowing
Huron County children to gain the
necessary skills if they ever experi-
ence a house fire.
Students at Seaforth Public
School, St. James School and the
Seaforth Cooperative Children's
- Centre toured a new $38,000 fire
safety house last week bought by
all 14 fire departments be nging to
the Huron County Mutu Aid.
Starting with a video on fire safe-
ty tips with Sparky the Fire Dog,
the tour through the fire safety
house included discussion about
kitchen safety in the trailer's work-
ing kitchen, a simulated 911 fire
call to emergency dispatch and a
chance to escape a smoke-filled
room by exiting a door or a window.
"It's a great teaching device and
this is our first time trying it," said
Seaforth firefighter Dave Garrick,
who spent the day helping students
climb out the window and try on the
firefighters' bunker gear.
Huron East.Fire Chief Marty
Bedard said the fire safety house
had 250 students visit it over its
two days in the Seaforth area.
"I think this will get a lot of use in
the county," he said.
Bedard said that while families
might have an escape plan at home
in case of fire, they rarely encounter
a situation where they get to prac-
tise leaving a smoke-filled room.
As well, most families do not prac-
tise escaping from a window of their
home.
"It's good for kids to be able to see
the smoke. If this were really hap-
pening, they would . be panicking,"
he said,
