School coalition looks to conserve energy

In a case of dreaming very big
dreams, a coalition seeking to
decrease the amount paid for energy
by Ontario's school boards has
begun exploring the possibility of
generating its own.
"It's a dream to make boards ener-
gy self-sufficient," explained
Ontario Public School Boards
Association (OPSBA) regional vice
president Colleen Schenk, who's
also the North Huron representa-
tive on the Avon Maitland District
School Board.
Schenk briefly described the ini-
tiative during an Avon Maitland
meeting Tuesday, Oct. 10. Part of
the OPSBA report, provided to Avon
Maitland trustees, explained "the
School Energy Coalition ... has met
with the Ministry of Finance, realiz-
ing they will need strong political
support, as well as intensive conser-
vation to make any scheme work."
According to Schenk, the estab-
lished mandate of the School
Energy Coalition is to seek out the
best deal possible for member school
boards, from existing energy suppli-
ers.
But as a recent sideline, the coali-
tion began discussing the possibility
of constructing a series of small-
scale energy generating facilities,
selling that ener-
gy into the
provincial power
grid, and essen-
tially (according
to the OPSBA

Eilsler suspended by Skate
Canada after 'serious allegations'
Lloyd Eisler, a former world champion and
one of Canada's most decorated pairs
skaters, has been: suspended from coaching
for one season by Skate Canada.
Chief executive William Thompson said
the suspension was meted out Oct. 3 after a
hearing by the organization's harassment
committee, which governs Skate Canada's
complaint, suspension and expulsion policy.
Eisler has until Nov. 18 to appeal.
Skate Canada refuses to divulge the rea-
son for their disciplinary action against the
two time Olympic bronze medalist.
It is believed the suspension came after
complaints were lodged against the 48 -year-
old from Seaforth while he was coaching at
the West Kingston Skating Club last sea-:
son.
"I wasn't surprised that he was suspended
and I wasn't surprised by the length of the
suspension, seeing as how the allegations
were quite serious," said Ben Russenholt,
who coached at the club with Eisler.
Eisler claimed he didn't know about his
suspension and was never informed of any
hearing.
"Obviously I'll have to call Skate Canada
and find out what's going on," Eisler said
from his home in California.

boards by 100 per cent."
"Theoretically, at least, they could
do it," Schenk said. She added the
three methods being proposed so far
are river -based hydroelectricity,..
solar power, and wind turbines.
