Seaforth gets juvenile men's hockey team
Jeff Heuchert
For the first time since the
Seaforth Centenaires Junior
D hockey team folded, play-
ers between the ages of 18
and 20 in Seaforth have a
local team to suit up for.
The Seaforth men's juve-
nile hockey team has been
formed with help of one
local woman, and will hit
the ice this weekend for its
first game of the season.
"It was just one of those
things we talked about and
somebody finally decided to
take the bull by the horns,"
says Seaforth's Lisa
Campbell, who has spear-
headed the team's develop-
ment and is a current mem-
ber of the minor hockey
board.
She says she became
interested in attempting to
form a team after her 18 -
year -old son said he still
wanted to play hockey.
However, since he could no
longer play at the midget
level and wasn't interested
in playing junior hockey,
there were no options avail-
able.
That situation has also
been the case- for players in
the area that do not make a
junior team or don't have
the time to commit to it.
"These kids still want to
play, Just because they're 18

doesn't mean they want to
hang up their skates."
She adds that some play-
ers in this position were
willing to travel and play
*with another juvenile team
last year.
As for getting the team
started, Campbell says
there were very few hoops
she had to jump through.
She first asked for support
from Seaforth minor hockey,
which they provided, along
with ice time at the Seaforth
arena for the team's home
games.
"Once they said yes, I
started calling up friends of
the family looking for play-
ers," says Campbell, who
says the team now has 17
players, but she is still look-
ing for three or four more.
She adds that there are
currently three local players
that are looking to be
released from their junior
level teams, in hopes of
playing hockey in Seaforth
instead.
"With this age group you
want to take a full roster,"
considering all of the other
commitments players that
age have, says Campbell.
And, those that have com-
mitted to the team, have
showed great enthusiasm
for representing Seaforth.
"They're happy and excit-
ed to be playing back iii.
their home town," she says,
adding the team, in keeping
with minor hockey, will be
named the Seaforth Stars.
While most of the team's
players are from Seaforth,
Campbell says since the
BCH Juveniles, from the
Clinton area, folded this
year, the Seaforth team will
have its share of Clinton
and Blyth area players as
well.
As fol- a coach, Rick
Elliott, of Blyth, who has
years of coaching experi-
ence, will be stepping
behind the bench.
Campbell says she is also
looking for a team sponsor,
to help fund the team's jer-
seys.
The Seaforth juveniles
play a 15 -game season, con-
sisting of one home and
away game each with Elma-
Logan, Exeter, Listowel,
Thedford, Howick, Arthur
and Wingham.
The Seaforth men's juve-
nile hockey team will drop
the puck on its first season
this Saturday, - Oct. 21; at
the Seaforth Community
Centre against Elma-Logan,
beginning at 8 p.m.

ing the team, or anyone,
