Wilkinson says he'll bring
concerns about Highway 8
to province's attention
Paul Cluff
The stretch of Highway 8 from Mitchell to
Seaforth needs repair and Perth -Middlesex
MPP John Wilkinson said he is ready to let
the Ministry of Transportation know about it.
Reacting to recent comments out of Huron
East council about the road's dismal condi-
tion, Wilkinson said last night he will bring
up the issue if constituents desire it.
Huron East is calling on surrounding
municipalities, including Perth County, to
lobby Wilkinson and Huron -Bruce MPP Carol
Mitchell for immediate reconstruction of the
Mitchell-to-Seaforth corridor.
A Seaforth councillor wondered where in
Ontario_there is a highway "in this big of a
mess," adding it is not safe to drive on it in
the winter.
Wilkinson said no constituents have con-
tacted him about the road in his three years
in office but he is willing to listen and ensure
their concerns are heard at Queen's Park.
But improvements won't come overnight,. he
warned.
"I know the work that is done is set by by
the Ministry of Transportation based on need.
We have eight years of infrastructure work
that didn't get done (by the former
Progressive Conservative government) so we
are playing catch up."
Some work has been done on the highway. A
stretch from Seaforth to Clinton was recon-
structed, and the Clinton to Goderich leg is
scheduled for completion.
The province is spending some $30 billion
on infrastructure, Wilkinson said.
"If people have concerns about safety they
can come to me. If they ask me to lobby the
Minister of Transportation, well, that's my
job."
