Friday for everyone in the 519 area code to be switched over, says Tuckersmith Communications manager Sharon Chuter. "We've sent out several letters to our customers and it's been all over the media. A lot of people have done it already - they got sick of the mes- sage but I know there will be peo- ple who waited until the last moment," she says of the change from seven to 10 digit phone num- bers. While the recorded message telling callers they must add the area code as part of the phone num- ber they are calling is no longer being used, callers who don't use the 10 -digit number will not be con- nected. Those who have not switched to 10 -digit numbers on their dial-up internet service or on their alarm t } I systems will find those services do 4 h , not work this week. .;. "Ninety-eight per cent of calls are being dialed `I with the 10 -digits y,as>r and we believe most people understand and are using it. It's been quite suc- cessful," uc cessful," says Johanne Lemay, x spokesperson for t h e ..9 s. Telecommunications Alliance, made up of Bell, Rogers, Telus, Fido, Thlebec, Allstream and Videotron. After a four-month transition period, 10 -digit dialing has been introduced to respond to the heavy demand for new phone numbers in certain regions a demand that continues to rise among , businesses and i s'• . r consumers alike, due to both population growth and the popularity of >Wti ry S giyiy'9R K communica- tions h 3 : tools like wireless, inter- yYFfv. F .•1 f< 'K'i net and IP tele- phone services. h ` And, in the f : Y 519 area code where numbers are running out, a new 226 area code will be given to new phone numbers within the 519 region from Tobermory to Windsor to Brantford. Lemay says the 226 will overlay the 519 area instead of dividing the region in half since it is more expen- sive to ask half of the region to change their area code from 519 to 226. "If we do an overlay, none of the existing phone numbers change. There are not many complaints. It's an annoyance but people are accept- ing it's a 10 -digit world now," she says. Chuter says she's heard no local complaints about the new area code but is expecting some once it begins. "It's not a choice. We are running out of phone numbers and will exhaust the 519 numbers soon," she says. "It's confusing but we're told it, will be much less confusing than keeping London at the 519 area code and making the outlying regions take the new area code," says Chuter, referring to an earlier decision s to give Toronto's core the 416 area code and making the surrounding region change to 905. Lamay says the 226 area code will begin to be issued to new phone numbers some- time during the next three months. RENOVATION AND HOME SPECIALISTS!!
