the network allows.
"We don't lose a lot of films - that's
relatively rare. But, there was a def-
inite delay of 36 to 48 hours in
transferring x-rays and other tests
between hospitals," says Scott.
She says the quicker turn -around
time for test results should help to
reduce waiting lists.
Dr. Dan Rooyakkers, site chief of
Seaforth Community Hospital, says
with the shortage of radiologists,
the PACS system will allow doctors
to go further afield when looking for
a radiologist to provide test results.
"We've had to overburden radiolo-
gists in our system but now we'll be
able to send films out for readings
in areas without shortages," he
says.
"As well, the radiologists won't
have to travel - we can zap the
images right down to them in;
London," says Rooyakkers.
Also, the PACS system, a part of
the move towards a totally electron-
ic medical file for patients, should
help to improve the efficiency of
hospital staff since it prevents the
duplication of gathering information
about a patient.
Scott says the PACS technology
will be most helpful for patients
seeking treatment at larger centres,.
such as the cancer centre in
London, since a local doctor and a
specialist will be able to view the
same test at the same time on their
own computers and discuss their
findings.
As well, anyone who travels and
finds themselves needing medical
care will be able to have their file
accessed wherever hospitals are
connected.
"For example, if you are a patient
with a son who plays hockey and he
gets injured away from home, the
follow-up treatment can be done
back at home using the PACS sys-
tem," she says.
Rooyakkers says the CR reader,
which has already been in operation
in Seaforth for several months
changing traditional films into digi-
tal images, has been improving doc-
tors' abilities to view x-rays and
diagnose.
"The equipment is fantastic. We
are already enjoying the detail on
the x-rays. The CR reader allows us
to magnify portions of the x-ray,
move it into different angles and
enhance the background. It's a huge
step forward in x-ray detail," he
says.
While the PACS project will pro-
vide four computer viewing stations
at the Seaforth Community
Hospital at locations such as the
•
emergency department, the nursing
station, x-ray and out-patients, the
system can be hooked up to the
Seaforth medical clinic so that doc-
tors can view test results immedi-
ately while remaining at the clinic. •
"The clinic will have to decide if
their computers are adequate - the
biggest thing will be high speed
•
internet," says Scott.
With so much personal informa-
tion available electronically, Scott
says security is a major concern and
a lot of energy will be spent keeping
the information protected.
"We don't want just anybody get-
ting into a patient's medical records.
We are very conscious of security,"

she says:
In Seaforth, the fundraising
involves two phases, the first
totalling $213,283 for workstations,
training and shared implementation
and the second totalling $350,000
for a new x-ray unit.
