Men's health dreturning Holmesville Oct. 24
The standing ovation at
last year's event was all the
inspiration needed to bring
back the Canadian Cancer
Society Men's Health
Dinner to Holmesville, Oct.
24.
"Last year, we thought it
was time to have an event
in Huron County specifical-
ly for and about men,"
explains Ray McNichol,
Canadian Cancer Society
volunteer from the Listowel
and Area branch. "We were
right. Men are concerned
about their health and they
do appreciate having a
forum to share their opin-
ions and learn more."
The featured speakers are
urologist, Dr. Bernard
Bukala. His presentation
will focus on bladder cancer.
And joining, Dr. Bukala is
prominent cancer
researcher, Dr. Glenn
Bauman. Dr. Bauman,
Director of Research,
London Regional Cancer
Program, London Health
Sciences Centre; Chair,
Oncology, Schulich School of
Medical & Dentistry, The
University . of Western
Ontario; and Associate
Scientist, Lawson Health
Research Institute, will pre-
sent "Cancer: Frequently
Asked Questions".

Several programs, both
new and old are being used
to combat bullying this
school year, but outside the
halls, officials say its up to
parents to ensure their kids
aren't being bullied or doing
the bullying.
Avon Maitland District
School Board (AMDSB) is
implementing it's character
program this year, using ten
positive attributes to pro-
mote good citizenship.
Mike Ash, system princi-
pal in charge of information
services for AMDSB says
there has been a high focus
on bullying in the last few
_years. A survey circulated
last spring helped develop
thecharacter plan. Other
programs include Imagine a
School Without Bullies,
RespectEd and Virtues.
"Bullying is a problem
regardless .of what school
you are in," says Ash,
adding the degree of the
problem depends on the
to combat bullying
community and school cul-
ture and how hard students,
teachers and parents are
working to stop it.
Bullying becomes less
prevalent in the summer
months because of vacations
and less face to face contact,
but always becomes an issue
again in the fall.
In rural areas with kids
communicating more and
more outside of school on
the internet, the chances of
online bullying increase,
although it remains rela-
tively small in number of
instances compared to ver-
bal or social bullying.
