Van Egmond Foundation looking for users of renovated buildin
Jeff Heuchert
Since finishing a series of
renovations to an old stor-
age shed this past winter,
the Van Egmond
Foundation is hoping their
$20,7000 worth of work will
be put to good use.
Van Egmond Foundation
chair Jim McIntosh says
while the renovated shed
has been used for founda-
tion dinners, a recent sup-
per for the Communities in
Bloom judges _ and at
Ciderfest, their plans are to
use the building as an inter-
pretive centre for school
children to learn about pio-
neer life and the history - of
Upper Canada.
But, points out McIntosh,
"It takes a while to build
that kind of usage."
To help organize schools'
involvement, the Van
Egmond Foundation has set
up a seven -person education
committee.
Peter Spittal, who sits on
the committee, says they
have yet to contact either
the Avon Maitland or
Huron -Perth District
Catholic School Boards, but
that they will be holding a
meeting in the near future
to prepare a package for
both school boards, outlin-
ing their plans.
"We just got it (the centre)
up and running so we'll be
getting together in the fall
to plan a curriculum for the
kids," says Spittal, who adds
they plan to first provide
lessons for Grade 3 students
and then eventually up to
the Grade 7 level - to go
along with a tour of the Van
Egmond house.
"We expect in June teach-
ers will be more mobile and
they'll be looking for some
kind of package," says
Spittal.
Repairs on the shed were
initially budgeted at
$20,500, which was what
the Van Egmond
Foundation applied for, and
received in Trillium funding.
However, due to rising
costs on building materials
over the year leading up to
work, McIntosh says the
foundation- .made some
changes to their initial plan
to stay within their budget.
"We changed our contrac-
tor and he found a more effi-
cient way of doing things,"
says McIntosh, adding they
also installed vinyl tiling on
the floors rather than new
concrete, which helped save
costs.
Other work done on the
shed included adding heat,
lighting, insulation, new
doors, storm windows, dry-
wall and wheelchair access.•:
McIntosh adds the centre
is also available to rent for a
group of around 20-60 peo-
ple at a cost of $75. Anyone
interested can contact a
member of the Van Egmond
Foundation.
