Councillors approved a motion put forth by the Planning, Agriculture and Public Works Committee that will see roads that are under construction closed to traffic. The committee is stress- ing the "when possible" clause, said chairman Bert Dykstra (Central Huron). Warden Rob Morley said the change will both save the county money and protect construction workers. Coun. Joe Seili (Huron East) said the current practice is not working because projects are not getting completed in a timely fashion. "What we're doing now is ridiculous," he says. "The work doesn't get done." Meanwhile, the county engineer reported provid- ing a safe work environ- ment and quality service, along with saving money, are the keys to good man- agement. Don Pletch reported the move will save the county up to $200,000 a year and it will allow work to get done faster. Trees count While hearing a Planning, Agriculture and Public Works committee report on the county's plans for tree harvesting on the Stevenson tract, Coun. Deb Shewfelt (Goderich) asked whether the county is planting trees. Coun. Ben Van Diepenbeek (ACW) reports the Maitland Valley Conservation Area reforests 100 acres every year. "There's a lot of refor- estation going on," he said, adding the harvest- ing is only aimed at thin- ning out the bush.
