News Bad shape of Highway 8 makes Huron East `second-class citizens,' says councillor Susan Hundertmark With highways in such rough shape that at least one councillor feels like a "second class citizen," Huron East is calling on surrounding municipalities to begin lobbying the province for reconstruction on Highway 8. "Where would you go and find a highway in this big a mess anywhere else .in Ontario?" asked Seaforth. Coun. Joe Steffler. Steffler was referring to Highway 8 between Seaforth and Mitchell. He said recent patching of the highway raised his hopes for road improvements but those hopes were dashed when yellow lines were painted over the patches. "That road is no good the way it is. Why are we treated like' second-class citizens?" he said. McKillop Coun. Sharon McClure said increased traffic on Hydro Line Road in McKillop is happening because of the rough condition of Highway 8. " We need to point out that everyone's using county roads and we're paying the bilis," added Deputy -Mayor Bernie MacLellan. Clerk -Administrator Jack McLachlan said Highway 8 is being surveyed between Goderich and Clinton and reminded council that Highway 8 between Seaforth and Clinton was reconstructed recently. Steffler responded that Highway 8 is surveyed so often that it could just as easily be paved. "It's not safe to drive on, espe- cially in the winter. It looks like they ran out of asphalt," he said, of the patches on Highway 8. } "You should take pictures of that road because it is awful," said Deputy -Clerk Brad Knight. Council passed a resolution asking for the support of Huron County, Perth County and West Perth council to petition Perth - Middlesex MPP John Wilkinson and Huron - Bruce MPP Carol Mitchell to support imme- diate reconstruction of Highway 8 between Seaforth and Mitchell. `Where would you go and find a highway in this big a mess anywhere else in Ontario?'-- Seaforth Coun. That decision came Thursday morning following a presentation from Huron East's deputy mayor, Bernie MacLellan. MacLellan asked council to write a letter in support of Huron East's request to have MTO fix the stretch of Highway 8 from Seaforth and Mitchell as it is in dire need of repair. "The province has really neglected this road," says MacLellan, noting it is council's contention that it may well be the worst -kept highway in the province. MacLellan also suggested individ- ual municipalities, including Clinton and Goderich, should con- sider writing a letter endorsing Huron East's request. Meanwhile, Coun. Bill Dowson L (Bluewater) asked whether. MacLellan would consider it a friendly motion to include Highway 21 in that request. "It's in bad shape. I think it's rougher than No. 8 highway," he says. MacLellan says while Huron East pondered including Highway 21 in its letter, councillors later decided it would be best to address the condi- tion of those highways separately. Coun. John Bezaire (Central Huron) suggested Huron East first contact the MTO to see if repairs are slated for that stretch of high- way since he is aware that Highway 8 between Clinton and Goderich is supposed to undergo repairs in 2007-08. MacLellan argued, letters of endorsement couldn't hurt even if MTO has that section of Highway 8 on its to-do list. Council endorsed MacLellan's request.
