h team from area wins 55 and over tournament
Jeff Heuchert
Up against teams from Huron -
Perth Counties and London, a team
of Huron County ball players,
including some local players, won
their second straight 55 and over
slo-pitch tournament in August.
Held Aug. 11, at the Wright
Diamonds in Stratford, the Huron
County team played three games,
defeating St. Marys and Stratford to
earn a spot in the finals against a
second team from Stratford.
Norah Eckert, of Bayfield, who
joined the team this season along
with Ann Bosman, of Winthrop,
says their team tied Stratford in the
finals, but won the tournament
based on runs scored throughout
their three games.

Having. never played in a 55 and
over ball tournament :before, Eckert
says she was amazed by the level of
talent most players could still play
at, considering their ages.
"It was great ball for our ages.
You'd see them (other players) run-
ning for a fly ball and they'd nab it,
and players were colliding with
other players. You'd think they'd
break their bones, she jokes.
"Just the fact that people still
keep involved with sports (at our
age)," she says, is great.
"You're never too old to exercise,"
• she adds, noting she was surprised
to learn some players on the field
were even over 80 years old.
To play in the tournament, the
team had to first qualify, playing a
tournament in Stratford in June, in
which they . won all four of their
games.
Other local players on the team
included Ruth Lowe, of Brussels
and Gord Pryce, of Walton.
