First division squad avoids relegation while third division squad finished above .500

Heading into the last two weeks of
the Western Ontario Soccer League
season, the possibility of being rele-
gated to second division was very
much on the minds of the St.
Columban mens' first division
squad.
However, their worries were laid
to rest as the team played strong
down the stretch, going undefeated
in their final five matches to earn a
seventh place finish in the division
with a record of 4-6-8.
And more importantly, they
earned a spot in the first division
again for next season.
"We knew in the last two weeks of
the season if we didn't get enough
points we'd be going down (relegat-
ed to second division), said long-
time player Steve Ryan, adding that
they recorded one win and four ties
in their last five games.
"They played tough and showed a
lot of character. We seemed to be
more of a team in the last two

SEASON
weeks," he said, noting that the
squad was put in this position after
a slow start, which saw them go 0-2-
4 out of the gate, before earning
their first win.
He said the losses early on were
due to the team not being comfort-
able with each other on the field,
mainly bedause of the addition of
five new young players to help
replace several team veterans, who
had moved on during the off-season.
"We lost some experience and the
young guys tried to fill those roles,"
said Ryan, noting however, that
when the team was on their heels,
the younger players helped pull the
team back when they needed it the
most.
"A lot of our young kids stepped it
up (towards the end) and started
scoring goals. They built their confi-
dence and that built the teams," he
said.
The first division team played in
both the League and Division Cups,
being eliminated in the second
rounds of both tournaments.
However, as was the case then,
Ryan says the team was rarely
blown _out, staying close in every
game.
As for any highlights to the sea-
son, Ryan points out their mid-sea-
son wins over Woodstock and St..
Thomas and a tie against
Portuguese - all among the first
division's •best, as some of their most
memorable.
