Child abuse at the forefront in October
Jeff Heuchert
COMM
Since many people still
struggle to report cases of
child abuse, the Huron -Perth
Children's Aid . Society
(HPCAS). is hoping a new
campaign will encourage
more people to use their voic-
es.
The HPCAS launched the
Use Your Voice campaign this
past weekend, and plans to
hold a series of events and
discussions in Huron and
Perth Counties throughout
October, which is Child Abuse
Prevention Month.
HPCAS director of services
Arijana Tomicic says she
hopes the campaign will
address a real problem in the
area.
"The number of child abuse
cases has been increasing,"
over the last three years she
says, noting however that the
number of cases in Huron
and Perth Counties is still
lower than many other coun-
ties in the area.
She adds that in cases of
sexual abuse against chil-
dren, the number of cases
have decreased over the last
five years.
A press release from the
HPCAS, says a 2005 study
shows 85 . per cent of
Ontarians said they would
report child abuse they had
personally witnessed, but
only 46 per cent would report
suspected child abuse.
"Many people struggle with
the decision to report child
abuse. Some people are not
aware of what will happen or
they're uncomfortable with
the consequences," says
Zbmicic.
"They fear they'll lose a
friendship or their relation-
ship (with someone) will
never be the same," she adds.
The Use Your Voice cam-
paign, being run in partner-
ship with the. Huron County
Child Abuse Prevention
Committee, kicked off this
past weekend in Stratford
with a Social Justice Fair.
On Oct. 12, Tomicic will be
appearing on the morning
talk show Daytime on Rogers
Television in Kitchener to dis-
cuss the child abuse, its pre-
vention and effects, followed
by a Teddy Bear Dream
Auction Oct. 14 at the Blyth
Festival Theatre.
There will be entertainment
provided, followed by an auc-
tion, where all proceeds will
go towards child abuse pre-
vention in Huron County.
On Oct. 23 at Knox
Presbyterian Church, in
Goderich, the HPCAS will
have a booth at the Huron
County Health and Safety
Fair, where they will be
handing out literature on
child abuse.
Tomicic says the HPCAS
goal is to simply raise public
knowledge about child abuse.
"It does happen in our com-
munity. By raising awareness
more people will realize this
is not appropriate," she says.
For more information on the
signs of abuse, or on any of
the upcoming events, call
