The possibility of having
to replace the playground
structure at Lions. Park in
Dublin_ over safety concerns
raised by the Municipality
of West Perth has Dublin
Lions Club .members con-
cerned there mightnot be a
playground at all in the
future.
In response to recommen-
dations from the municipali-
ty to replace the play-
ground, Dublin Lions Club.
President Greg Ryan, in a
letter submitted last week
to West Perth municipal
council, said they would like
their own inspection per-
formed by a certified play
structure inspector, before
any action is taken.
"We feel that the potential
cost of replacement is great
enough to warrant such
11-114,
investigation first, before
any other remedies are
undertaken, including
potential removal of the
structure," he said in his let-
ter.
The playground, along
with the pavilion, is owned
by the municipality but is
taken care of by the Lions
Club.
According to West Perth
Operations Manager Mike
Kraemer, the municipality
has concerns over the height
of the playground structure
and the pressure -treated
wood that was used when it
was built. Kraemer brought
up the problem a few
months ago after the munic-
ipality's insurance provider
said it was non-compliant
and has discussed the mat-
ter with the Lions Club.
The wood, while good for
withstanding rot and
insects, contains toxic com-
pounds, commonly used in
playgrounds, decks and pic-
nic tables built years ago.
Ryan, in a phone inter-
view, said the park has been
in place for over 25 years
and it would be a shame if
they cannot afford to rebuild
it - if that becomes their•
only option.
"We rent out the pavilion
for familyreunions and
gatherings and there are
always kids on the play-
ground. In the past 25 years
I don't know of anybody get-
ting hurt," he said.
"We don't see it as being
that big of an issue," he
added, addressing the con-
cerns over the . pressure -
treated wood.
West Perth council decided
to split the $425 cost for the
inspection with the Lions
Club, and .passed a motion
at their Sept. 18 committee
meeting.

"We are a non-profit orga-
nization," Ryan said. "Even
if it costs $5,000, where are
we going to. get that kind of.
money? And $5,000 is on the
low end."
For the time being the
playground remains open-
and is still covered by the
municipality's insurance.
Ryan said one option they.
are considering to better
comply with regulations is
cutting off some of the top
bars on the playground to
lower it. However, he said
the :cost to replace all of the
wood would be too high.
"This has been brought up
many times and •we keep
telling them to grandfather
it (the regulations) in," said
Ryan. "Just leave it alone."
