New Hurricanes coach excited to start first season
Jeff Heuchert
With the first official swim of the
season coming up for the Huron
Hurricanes Aquatic Club, new head
coach Wendy Million, of Goderich, is
hoping her 20 -plus years of experi-
ence around the pool will be put to
good use.
"I'm so excited. I have a lot of new
ideas to get the club more goal
focussed," said Million during a
recent phone interview from her
home in Goderich. -
"I want the kids to know. where
they want to go and howthey're
going to get there."
Million, 27, who is replacing for-
mer coach Julia Pettapiece, - is quite
familiar with the Hurricanes
Aquatic Club.
At age 13, having swum since she
was five with the Goderich Lake
Town. Racers, she was approached
by organizers to become one of the
club's founding members.
Million swam with the Hurricanes
until she was 18, when she headed
off to Carlton University to study
English. She also swam with the
varsity team for four years.
Among her accomplishments with
the Carlton swim team is qualifying
for two nationals, being selected
team captain twice and being
awarded MVP honours once.
After obtaining her masters in
English literature, Million moved to
England in 2003, where she taught
English at a secondary school up
until this past summer.
At that point, Million said she had
come to a crossroad, where she had
to decide between becoming a per-
manent resident over seas, or
returning home.
"The whole reason I went over
there is to not get stuck in the same
place and that's what I was going to
do. So I had to decide," she said.
Upon returning home, Million said
she had hoped to find a position as a
supply teacher - which she is still
pursuing - and possibly help out
Wendy Million
coaching the Hurricanes.
"I was driving around the Square
and noticed a posting for the- head
coaching position," she recalls. "I
was hoping the Hurricanes needed
help, but I wasn't aware they didn't
have a head coach."
Million . acknowledges that build-
ing a stronger base of competitive
swimmers on the Hurricanes is
going to be a challenge and that it
will take time.
"I would like to see it more com--
petitive
om-petitive and have a variety of swim-
mers to draw on," she said.
"They have a history of being com-
petitive. It's just the last few years
it's not been. It will be a long haul to
get back there. It takes a lot to.get a
strong swimmer, anda while to
build those skills," sho added.
"If you promote it as being fun,
they'll pick it up on their own. They
have to feel it's fun. They have to
be the motivating factor," she said,
rather than the parents.
Million helped coach a swim club
of nearly 100 kids while in England
- almost double the number she will
probably have with the Hurricanes.
She said she. has
many new ideas she's
hoping to implement
with the Hurricanes
this season, such as a
log book each swimmer
will keep up, in hopes
that it "will make them
take ownership of their
training."
"This way they can
understand' where
they're at and monitor
their own progress,"
she said, adding that it
will also provide her
with a reference for
each kid.
Another of her ideas
is to incorporate .a
swimmer of the month
program, where she
will select a swimmer
based on their atten-
dance, attitude and
how much they've
improved.
