Council considers raising fines for parking in
handicapped spots throughout Huron East
Susan H,undertmark
As Huron East's adminis-
tration takes a closer look at
its parking bylaw, council-
lors are suggesting higher
fines and more visible park-
ing spots for the handi-
capped throughout the
municipality.
A letter from Jacquie
Waechter, of _ Brussels,
requested Huron East
impose a $300 fine for those
abusing the handicapped
parking spots.
"Those of us who need
these spots get very agitat-
ed by the lack of respect
shown' us from these unrea-
sonable people," she said,
asking for .two spots on
Brussels' main street,.
including one in front of the
laundry and one in front ; of
the lawyer's office.
Waechter said she's tried
writing to Road Watch but
the only result was a warn-
ing to the abusers.
She said a $300 fine is in
line with Goderich and
Clinton while Listowel and
Wingham impose $100
fines.
Clerk -Administrator Jack
McLachlan said Huron
East's fine is currently . $25
and it is never enforced.
"That's the problem. If
you don't use it, it doesn't
matter if it's $300," said
Deputy -Mayor- Bernie
MacLellan, adding he
agrees with a $100 fine. •
Grey Coun. Mark Beaven
agreed with the $100 fine.
"It's (parking in a handi-
capped parking spot with-
out a permit) probably the
nibgt disrespectful action
and $100 is significant
but I wouldn't want it
any less," he said.
Mayor Joe Seili said
he agreed with McKillop
Coun. Sharon McClure's
suggestion of a penalty
of a day in a wheelchair
but added, "You'd have
to have a judge impose
that."
Tuckersmith Coun.
Larry McGrath asked
that Huron East's handi-
capped parking spots be
painted blue, as was
suggested in Waechter's
letter.
"Not everyone looks up
when they're parking
their car. It needs to be
clearly marked with a
big blue spot, so clear
you're almost afraid to
step in it, not two faded
white lines," he said.
"Pay .$300 and you'll
look next time," replied
•Beaven.
Waechter also asked
for two more handi-
capped spots (for a total
of four) at the Brussels,
Morris and Grey
Community Centre but
