Beef plant organizers look for
foreignfood company to invest
From Page 1
BSE crisis to 105,000 a week today with open
borders between Canada and the U.S., Nichol
said CanAdvance could not see
past the fact that the Brussels
plant would increase that capaci-
ty by 1,000 head a week.
"So we got turned down for the
sake of less than one per centa
week in capacity. It's a drop in
the bucket," he said.
He added whatCanAdvance
failed to see was ` that the
Brussels plant is not planning to
market its beef in the U.S. but in
foreign markets.
Nichol said a recent announce-
ment by the federal government
that $50 million will be spent on
researching international mar
kets for Canadian beef will only
benefit existing beef plants even
though, ironically, markets in
Mexico, Southeast Asia and
Hong Kong are the markets being
targetted by the proposed Brussels beef
plant.
"With so much attention given to the U.S.
market during the BSE crisis, we forget that
other regions of the world are interested in
what Canada has to offer," Nichol said in a
recent press release.
"Hong Kong and Southeast Asia are among
the fastest growing markets in the world and
with increases in the standard of living; the
demand for high quality meat products is
growing immensely," he said.
Huron East economic develop-
ment officer Ralph Laviolette
said the plan now is to look for a
foreign investor in the Brussels
plant.
"Our attention has always
been to the foreign export mar-
ket and we know in theory, it's
viable," he said.
Nichol said a foreign food com-
pany that wants to establish a
secure supply chain of beef
could easily be interested in
buying a plant in Canada.
He added the model of a co-op
owned by local farmers no
longer seems to be a viable
option since so many local farm-
ers are struggling financially.
"We. would have liked nothing
better than to have this plant
producer -owned. But, the reality is we have a
price tag of $35 million to build the plant and
we are just not going to find that kind of
money from the producers themselves," he
said in the press release.
The proposal is now being shared with offi-
cials at the federal Agri -food Investment
Secretariat and the Ontario Investment
Service, both of which deal frequently with
out -of -country investors, to start "shopping it
around."
Laviolette says the concept of the Brussels
plant is still a good one.
"We're still trying to reduce the risk of the
local producer so he can avoid being trapped
by the existing system. This is still an oppor-
tunity to smooth out the curves of a volatile
market," he said.

Overholt said it was wonderful to
be noticed as a unique program.
"This will help to get us better
known and I don't think it will hurt
when we're making new (funding)
applications that we've gone beyond
Huron County borders," she said.
The Town and Country Ontario
program airs on A Channel in
London at 7 a.m. Saturdays and on
Global at 6:30 a.m. Saturdays.
The segment on Healthkick Huron
