Rock band competes at Western Fair
Susan

Starting out as a
bandto play at school
dances at Huron
Centennial Public
School, six Grade 9
students who form
the group Edge of
Reason ended up in
the semi-finals at the
Western Fair talent
search this year.
Rob Henderson,
vocals, Brian
Landsborough, key-
board, Ryan Finnie,
drums, Craig
Windsor, rhythm gui-
tar, Dan Steinman,
guitar and Stevie
Smith, bass all of
Central Huron
Secondary School -
qualified to compete
in the Western Fair
talent search at the
Clinton spring fair.
Because Huron
Centennial has an
instrumental music
program, all six were
involved in singing in
school musicals or
playing various
instruments.
But, they formed a
rock band at the
impetus of French
teacher John Powers,
who also enjoys play-
ing musical instru-
ments.
"He's amazing. He
can play anything
you put in front of
him," says Windsor.
"The school needed
a rock band for
dances and stuff,"

a.
adds Landsborough.
Because the six of
them love rock music
although
Landsborough adds
he's the only one to
enjoy country music -
their repetoire began
with Help! by the
Beatles and includes
their two perfor-
mance pieces, Are
You Going To Be My
Girl? by Jet and Hard
to Handle by the
Black Crowes.
They say they
chose the name Edge
of Reason because
"we just thought it
was cool," says
Finnie.
Placing fourth out
of 12 entries at the
Clinton fair, Edge of
Reason performed
Are You Going To Be
My Girl?
"We've been doing
that song since we
startedit_ was about
our second or third
song," says Steinman.
Finnie says they
chose it because it
shows their vocal
range and gives
everyone in the band
a solo.
"And, it gets every-
one going. It was
pretty fun," he says,
adding that Edge of
Reason got the crowd
and the judges clap-
ping their hands
along to the song.
While the 14 -year-
old band members
had some nerves
competing in Clinton,
they admit they were

"really nervous* at
London's Western
Fair.
Plus, they had a
few technical difficul-
ties. Finnie says his
drum set kept sliding
away from him down
the slanted stage at
the Western Fair.
"Everytime I
stopped drumming, I
had to pull the drums
back towards me but
I just never stopped,"
he says.
As well, problems
with the tuning of
Windsor's electric
guitar forced him to
play his acoustic gui-
tar during the compe-
tition.
"The guitar just
wasn't loud enough,"
he says.
Still, they were
happy to get past the
quarter -finals and

did play well. We
made it farther than
I thought we would,"
says Windsor.
"We did what we
could and we were
there to entertain
people," adds
Steinman.
The six say they
plan to keep the band
together now that
they're in high school,
possibly playing at
some of the school
coffeehouses and
maybe competing
again next year at
the fair.
"We're going to
keep it going and get
together whenever
we feel like jam-
ming," says Finnie.
"It's a passion -
something we love to
do," he says.
At the Western
Fair competition,
Dan Steinman's
brother Bradley went
on to the semi-finals
also as a soloist,
