As the owner of the Dublin
General Store for the past 10 years,
Andrew Flowers sees hundreds of
local people every week.
As a councillor for McKillop ward
on Huron East council, Flowers
says ratepayers would definitely
have his ear.
"I hear what people are happy
and unhappy about every day," he
says.
Flowers decided to run for council
when he learned that both of
McKillop's representatives (Sharon.
McClure and Ferg Kelly) have
decided not to run for council again.
"That pushed me a little on an
idea I'd been toying with for
awhile," he says. "And, it's been very
good - I've received nothing but
encouragement about it."
As a member of the Dublin Lions
Club, Flowers says he's been
involved in community events and
projects for the past 10 years.
"Now, it's time to take it to the
next level," he says.
Flowers also farmed for 10 years
outside of Clinton on a dairy farm
before becoming a small business
owner, "so I know all sides of the
coin," he says.
When asked if there are any
issues he feels strongly about or any
goals he's like to pursue, Flowers
says he's like to let ratepayers
decide what's important in their
municipality.
"I'd be challenged and honoured
to represent the area. And, I like
challenges. This couldn't have come
at a better time," he says.
Flowers and his partner Brenda
McCarthy have five children.

No decision yet
on compost facility
near Seaforth
Huron East council is still waiting
to hear from its insurance company
before making any decisions about
moving its compost facility.
Council tabled the issue at its
Aug. 22 meeting after Seaforth
Coun. Joe Steffler asked to keep the
compost facility in Harpurhey,
despite a decision made last August
to move it to the Tuckersmith gravel
pit on Roman Road.
Council received a letter from Bob
Fisher expressing strong support to
keep the compost facility in
Harpurhey.
"Asking someone to take their
compostable materials approximate-
ly 12 miles round trip is not user
friendly and driving creates more
pollution," he said in the letter.
Fisher said composting is a supe-
rior alternative to burning waste or
asking residents to drive further.
Deputy -Clerk Brad Knight told
council that a representative from
the Ministry of the Environment
has looked at the compost site and
said he's not concerned if it's only
being used as a drop-off spot.
