.Former McKillop reeve running in Huron East
Bill Siemon hopes to continue 20-yearpolitical career as McKillop ward councillor
Susan Hundertmark
After a six-year break from a 20 -
year political career in McKillop
Township, Bill Siemon is running
again as McKillop ward councillor
for Huron East.
As reeve of McKillop during the
discussions about the amalgamation
of Huron East, Siemon ran for
deputy -reeve in the 2000 municipal
election and lost.
"I loved the break. I had a triple
bypass, sold my insurance business
and took more time to enjoy life," he
says, adding he's still farming with
a 50 -acre beef operation, which he
describes as "only big enough to call
it a hobby."
First elected to McKillop
Township as a councillor in 1980,
Siemon says hestarted before
McKillop had any paved roads.
"But, 40 miles were paved by the
time I left. We got a lot done but we
always ran the township on very lit-
tle," he says.
After nine years as councillor, he
spent 10 years as deputy -reeve and
one year as reeve.
"Sharon (McClure) and Ferg
(Kelly) have been carrying the torch
for us and they asked, me if I'dcon-
sider it (running for council to rep-
resent McKillop). I have the time

now and the experience. It gets in
your blood," he says of political life.
With McKillop's 150th anniver-
sary coming up next year, Siemon
says he'd like to sit on council to
help prepare for the celebration.
Also, he'd like to promote environ-
mental issues, supporting more tree
cover in the municipality.
"The environment is important to
me," he says, adding he's still
involved with the Maitland Valley
Conservation Authority foundation.
Supporting farmers and agricul-
ture is "a given if you live in
McKillop," says Siemon, pointing
out that there are 50,000 acres of
farmland in the ward.
"It'd be great to give it a whirl
again. It's great to have young peo-
ple on council looking ahead but
many of them don't have the time
these days," he says.
"Getting on council is quite a com-
mitment but I know I'm not moving
anywhere else at this stage of my
life," says Siemon:
