"Jesus grieves for sheep without a shepherd and that seemed to be a charac- teristic of this church - that they were looking for a shepherd. A shepherd knows his sheep and has a genuine con- cern for them," he says. Kennedy, who's been a minister for 24 years, was raised in Sarnia but has spent close to 20 years in Britis Columbia where he met his wife. He and his f a m i l returned from B.C. six and a half years ago to Arnprior, Ont., his last charge before Seaforth. "I miss the mountains and the ocean but Lake Huron's not far away," he says. "We really sensed the Lord opening an opportu- nity to come here." Before making any plans for his time at Bethel Bible, Kennedy says it's very important to get to know the congregation's vision about the church's role in the community. "I'm a firm believer in Mark Kenne Susan H u n d e r t m a r k With his primary aim to get to know people at his new job as Bethel Bible's minister, Mark Kennedy is finding it harder now that his four children have grown and left the nest. But, since moving to Seaforth in June after beginning the job in April, he's finding his walks to work are helping him make con- nections. "This is the first church we've gone to as empty -nesters and kids .really plug you into the schools and the neighbour- hood. I never. realized . how important my kids were to my ministry," he says. "And, I had no idea that being a part of the commu- nity would be so important. People tell me all the time how good it is to see the pas- tor walking to work," laughs Kennedy. Using the Biblical metaphor of the good shep- herd, Kennedy says he's hoping tobecome a shep- herd to the 60 families now News y is Bethel Bible's new pastor The Huron Expositor • September 20, 2006 Page 7 Mark Kennedy team leadership and work- ing together. If I'm leading and no one's following, I'm just going for a walk," he says. So far, Kennedy says he's enjoying the community in Seaforth and has joined in events such as July.'s Moonlight Madness, where Bethel Bible held a barbe- cue. "This is just a great little community. Seaforth has got a lot of civic pride and I've been quite impressed by it," he says. And, as he gets to know his congregation, Kennedy extends a welcome to the whole community. "Some people think church is like a club where only members can go but that's not so. There's a warm welcome to anyone who wants to check things out," says Kennedy. "I'm pleased there's a good group of people here but we do have room to grow," he says.
