Huron East discusses how
to contribute to Ag Society
Susan Hundertmark
A letter from Jim Floyd of the Seaforth
Agricultural Society prompted a discussion on
the most appropriate way for the municipality
of. Huron East to contribute to the Ag
Society's annual elimination draw.
In the letter, Floyd asks for a donation to
the draw, the Ag Society's major fundraiser of
the year which allows the Seaforth fall fair to
operate without charging admission.
This is the first time the Ag Society has
approached council to donate towards its
elimination draw,. said Mayor Joe Seili.
Deputy -Mayor Bernie MacLellan said he
had a hard time making a financial donation
to the event when the Ag Society is . asking
ratepayers to donate already by buying tick-
ets to the draw.
"It's not fair to give a grant because people
are being hit twice for it. It doesn't seem
appropriate," he said
Seili suggested that Huron East contribute
something for the prize list.
"There are 50 some campers up there
brought into the community for the draw and
something with our name on it is good adver-
tising," he said.
Seaforth Coun. Lou Maloney wondered why
the Ag Society is offering free admission at
the fair.
"It's not bring people to the fair," he said.
Brussels Coun. David Blaney defended the
free admission, saying the same tactic has
increased traffic at the Brussels fall fair.
Blaney said Huron East buying an ad in a
tourist publication could be the municipality's
contribution towards the elimination draw.
Grey Coun. Mark Beaven suggested creat-
ing a prize package with municipal memora-
bilia such as hats and shirts.
Seaforth Coun. Joe Sterner suggested a
photo of Huron East's town hall but
McKillop Coun. Sharon McClure dis-
agreed, saying anyone from outside

Clerk -Administrator Jack
McLachlan said the $1 million pro-
ject will have to go ahead regardless
if Huron East is turned down a
third time.
If there is no provincial or federal
help, the residents of Vanastra will
be charged to pay for the project but
no amounts have been determined.
"We hope to hear before the end of
the year if we get the COMRIF
funding," said McLachlan.
the municipality wouldn't want it.
"I wouldn't want a picture of someone else's
town hall. Where would your wife put it?" she
said.
Council agreed to donate a $100 prize pack-
age to be determined by the staff.
Mayor asks county for help
repairing historical sites
As construction begins on repairs to the
Vanastra gates, Deputy -Mayor Bernie
MacLellan congratulated Mayor Joe Seili for
arguing with Huron County council to con-
tribute towards the upkeep of historic sites
throughout Huron.
"The mayor put up a great argument of why
it shouldn't be the sole responsibility of
Huron East," MacLellan told council on the
Sept.^ 13 meeting.
MacLellan said that while a 9-8 vote pre-
vented Huron County from contributing to
the cost of repairing Vanastra. gates, the dis-
cussion provoked debate about whether or not
the county should create a policy about the
maintenance of historical
sites in Huron County.
"We stated we've been
looking at it (repairing
Vanastra gates) for three
years," he said, adding
that he's hoping any con-
tribution will be retroac-
tive if the county decides
to fund historical sites
next spring.
"Kudos to the mayor - he
did a good job of explain-
ing why this isn't just a
Huron East issue," said
MacLellan.
The tender to fix
Vanastra gates went to
Claude Guay Masonery of
Lucknow for $6,870.
