Hensall rider wins first Ontario Cup race
Crystal Stewart
It only took one race without a
crash for Devon Long to win his
first Ontario Cup Downhill moun-
tain bike race this year.
Hundreds of racers turned out for
the recent Ontario Provincial Finals
at Camp Fortune, Quebec, where
Long placed first in his Junior
Expert category.
Points from the Ontario Cup sum-
mer series were tallied, at the
end event and overall winners
announced. Long finished fourth for
the year.
"I had a couple bad races at the
beginning of the season," says the
18 -year-old Hensall resident.
That said, he only considers one
crash significant - when he broke
his thumb going down Quebec's
Mont Sainte -Anne.
He admits that fall left him a lit-
tle shaken - but it didn't stop him
from completing the race, injured

In past years Long has broken his
collarbone and suffered a few con-
cussions. The obvious danger both-
ered his parents at first, but Long
says they realize how committed he
is to the sport and support him.
Long has been involved in down-
hill biking for three years, two of
which he has competed in Ontario
and Canadian competitions.

He started out in the Sport cate-
gory, finishing second overall last
year. Next year he'll move up to
Senior.
He plans to keep at it, eventually
making it to the top.
I hope to qualify for pro class and

says Long. -
Long got into competitive biking
after visiting a London bike shop, To
Wheels, whichis now one of his
sponsors.
He had become fed up with his
own bike's tendency to break. Being
told about the sport, he went out to

be found practising on weekends
when there aren't any competitions.
He isn't part of a team and doesn't
have a coach.
"It's more of an individual thing,"
says Long, adding he prefers down-
hill to other forms of bike racing
because . of the speed and trail fea-
tures such as trees, tight corners,
jumps, drops and rock gardens.
That and cross country has "too.
much pedaling uphill."
He learns by watching the style of
others, both on television shows
dedicated to the sport and up close
on the trails.
Fate seems to be taking him ever
closer to the heart of the sport. He
left last week to take a year-long
post -secondary course in British
Columbia. It's a nice coincidence the
only place in Canada that offers an
appliance service technician course
is also the best place in the world
