Control of clean water will result in glo al
wars, predicts activist Maude Barlow
Mark Nonkes
The fight for blue gold is on the
horizon, a noted activist and author
told a group gathered in the
Goderich arena last week.
Maude Barlow, keynote speaker
at It All Ends Up in the Lake,
warned local residents that wars
will be waged for fresh water in the
future.
"In some parts of the world it is
what I call blue gold, and there is a
mighty contest between who is
going to control water," Barlow told
a crowd of about 100 people.
Already, the lack of clean water is
killing children, Barlow said. In
fact, she disclosed that every eight
seconds in the Third World a child
somewhere dies of a water -born dis-
ease.
"The global water crisis is the
greatest environmental and human
rights crisis of our time," expressed k
left, Barlow
tinues to be

"We are
mining the
world's
groundwa-
ter," said
Barlow,
the nation-
al chair-
person of
t h e
Council for
Canadians
and author
of 11
books.
"Now we
are going
in and we
said, con -
destroyed
with water."
Barlow criticized international
corporations, world governments
and agriculture for not
doing enough to protect
water.
"I hate doing this to
you because I hate peo-
ple who do this to me,"
Barlow remarked. "It
all sounds like the end
of the world and there
is nothing we can do
and I don't believe that
for a minute."
Barlow said she is
working to get a Right
to Water convention at
Maude Barlow the United Nations.
She's met with govern-
ment officials across the

The fresh water that we do have confence held in Goderich recently. they move on and this
is what is happening
globe to try and make it happen.
"If we can get the notion that
water is a human right at the
United Nations we would have a
very different international frame-
work."
