After losing three relativesto..
cancer, local girl donates hair
Susan Hundertmark
After losing three close rel-
atives to cancer, 11 -year-old
Rachel Purdy, of Winthrop,
wanted to do something to
fight the disease.
First, at age three, her
uncle Carl Cooper died at age
51 of stomach cancer.
Next, at age eight, her aunt
Cindy Hunt died of breast
cancer.
Then, at age 10, her aunt
Teresa Cooper died of liver
and pancreas cancer.
"When she found out she
could grow her hair and
donate it, that's been her
plan ever since," says
Rachel's mom Paula Purdy.
Taking five or six years, the
process has been slow and
sometimes difficult, especial-
ly on hot summer days when
she thought cutting her hair
might be a good idea.
"On those days, we'd mea-
sure it a lot, especially when
it started getting close," says
Paula of the required 10 inch-
es of hair for the donation..
While Rachel was a little
too young to have much
memory of her Uncle Carl,
she remembers her Aunt
Cindy and the candy drawer
she had in her house.
"Cindy had a wig made of
Rachel Purdy
donated hair so that's when
Rachel actually saw growing
hair to be donated as some-
thing that actually happens,"
says her mom.
She. remembers her Aunt
Teresa the best.
"She was really nice. We
used to go up north camping
together," says Rachel.
And, while she's finally
grown her first hair .donation
for cancer, Rachel says it's
not her last.
"I will grow my hair again,"
she says.
Other schools to tour St. James
for best practices in literacy
From Page 1
She said St. James has achieved a number
of "best practices" in teaching both literacy
and numeracy that will be shared during the
visits.
Principal Mary Brown said the school was
short-listed as a "lighthouse" school last
spring and staff learned St. James was cho-
sen last May.
"It's a real compliment and we're proud. It's
great to be given the affirmation that what
you're doing is good stuff," she said, praising
the staff for their work.
"It's all about our staff. We have incredible
teachers and they work so well together. The
parent commitment in this school is so strong
as well," she said.
Pupatello said St. James'
achievement is one indication of how
well the Ontario school system is
doing.
"You have a great group of peo-
ple here. It's very apparent you're
here for the kids," she said.
She added that with 69 delega-
tions from countries around the
world visiting Ontario schools last
year, Ontario is being seen as a glob-
al leader in education.
"I want to say thanks and to
tell you to be proud of our system,"
she said.
