day to the fullest and loved his
friends and family more than any-
thing else.
He dreamed of being a farmer
when he was young, and had been
working at an area farm since the
spring, said his mother, Mary
Helen. He was heading to the farm
before the crash:-
"He
rash"He was doing what he wanted to
do," said his sister, Sarah.
As a child, Van Loon created
farms out of shoe boxes, toy animals
and John Deere models and enjoyed
seeing farm equipment around their
home, his mother said.
"The bigger the better," she said.
The second -eldest of four children,
Van Loon had an easygoing person-
ality and was glad to meet
Hamilton Tiger -Cat cheerleaders
with friends last weekend.
"He's not even a football fan. But
he was so excited about going," his
mother said.
He was "idolized" by his two
younger -cousins, who called him
"Reg" -- scrambled letters from his
name.
"He never did anything wrong in
their eyes. He was just perfect," said
Sarah, wiping
away tears.
At another
farm, Cathy
Elliot remem-
bered her friend,
Alfred Chappel,
as a "jovial, car-
ing and warm"
man who loved
his wife Ruth,
daughters Jenna,
12, and Laura,
11, and his son
William.
"I'd always see
him out in .they
yard with his:;
children," she said. "He was a. won-
derful dad."
Chappel was part of the local
church community, along with his
wife, she said.
Ruth Chappel attended the funer-
al of her father, Ernest Harburn, in
Seaforth last Wednesday. Poulin
said he can't even imagine what she
must be going through.
"It's overwhelming. It's just over-
whelming," he said. "You feel for
both of these families."
