Sharon McClure is retiring

time filling the
positions on its
council and had
to extend its
nomination dead-
line by three
days. _

forth her name
as councillor but
she turned him
down.
"I initially said
no but he con-
vinced me to give
it a try," she says.
And now, after
serving McKillop
for 12 years and
Huron East for
six more,
McClure has Sharon McClure and three of her
decided to retire and Amy Alcock, 8.
from municipal
politics and will not be running in this fall's
election.
"I said, if I don't like it, I won't serve again
but I obviously did. It was a great learning
experience and I never regretted it," she says,
adding that during her time on council, she's
only been challenged for her seat once.
She says she and her husband Bill decided
it's time to spend more time with their seven
grandchildren and to travel.
"We think it's time for a change. Surely,
someone will have the time and interest to
serve in my place," she says.
McClure says council has never seemed like
a really tough job because she started out in a
smaller municipality before amalgamation
and kept learning as changes occurred.
"I didn't find it was work. I never
worked outside the home so I had
time to go through the agendas and I
always looked forward to seeing
what was on the agenda for each
meeting," she says.
While she was one of the only
women on council in both McKillop
and' Huron East during her tenure,
McClure says her gender has rarely
been an issue.
"Most of the councillors treated
you as an equal," she says.
A councillor when McKillop began
its paving program, McClure says
she's been happy to make sure the
roads of McKillop were in good
shape.
"We were one of the most paved
rural municipalities and the people
were happy with it," she says.
As well, McClure says she's
learned a great deal about the work-
ings of a municipality, including fire

protection, municipal drains and most .recent-
ly about water and sewer issues:
"People don't realize all it takes to. make a
municipality work. Things come down from
the -province and you have to do them," she
says, adding that more and more responsibili-
ty is coming into the municipal realm, such as
healthcare.
McClure says she's enjoyed the social aspect
of politics over the past 18 years, making
friends both on council and through the con-
ventions she's attended.
"We've had some very serious discussions at
the council table but there has always been
light-hearted humour afterwards - a grudge is
never carried," she says.
