Minor ball wraps up in Seaforth

The minor baseball season has
wrapped up for most teams in
Seaforth and Winthrop, but not
without some terrific results during
the year-end playoffs.
The Seaforth and Winthrop pre -
mites finished up their seasons in
Londesboro over the July 28-29
weekend.
The first of two Seaforth pre -
mites teams put the finishing touch-
es on what- coach Neil Steenstra
calls an "awesome season,". in which
they lost only once during the regu-
lar season, on -way to winning the A
championship.
Steenstra, whose team played
Stanley, Blyth, Benmiller and.
Holmesville in the playoffs, says his
players showed a. lot of improve-
ment throughout the season.
Seaforth's other pre -mites squad,
coached by Mark MacDonald, head-
ed into the year-end playoffs after, a
.500 regular season.
MacDonald describes the playoffs
as "a heartbreaker," for his team,
after being eliminated by
Holmesville.
"But a heck of a fight given by our
guys. Every one of the kids showed
great improvements and developed
a strong understanding for the
game," he says.
The Winthrop pre -mites' season
went very well according to coach
Brent Robinson.
His team tied in the B champi-
onship game with Holmesville, after
wins against Stanley and Benmiller.
"It's amazing how much the kids
improved from the start of the sea-
son - to throwing and hand -eye coor-
dination hitting the ball," says
Robinson.
The Winthrop mites put the -fin-
ishing touches on a perfect season
during their year-end playoffs in
Londesboro Aug. 11-12, defeating
Seaforth to win the A champi-
onship.
Coach Randy Lammerant says his
players were an eager group of kids
who wanted to learn, as they proved
with their 20-0 record, including
playoffs.
"They were a well-rounded team,"
he says. "We averaged 24 runs a
game and only four against," he
notes.
Meanwhile, the Seaforth mites
took their .500 regular season
record into the playoffs, where they
lost two and won one before falling
to Winthrop in the A finals.
Coach Steve Kropf says his team
had a slow start to the season, but
continued to improve throughout,
adding that by the playoffs they
were playing their best ball of the
season.
"Each game was close," says
Kropf. "It was just a couple bad
innings against Winthrop. But run-
ners-up is something to be proud
of."
Seaforth's squirt team was
knocked out of their year-end play-
offs after two straight losses to
Varna and Benmiller.
The playoffs were played in Varna
Aug. 19.
The squirts "recorded a strong 7-3
record during the regular season -
even putting together a string of
five straight wins at one point.
Assistant coach Mike Meidinger
says nine of their team's 15 players
were in their first year at the squirt
level, which is a big transition from
mites.
The Seaforth girls' peewee team
played hard through a difficult sea-
son, according .. to coach Pete
Rowntree.
The girls fin-
ished with a 1-11
regular - season
record, while
four games were
rained out.

Their opening
round playoff
matchup was a
best -of -three
series with
Colbourne, who
won in two
straight victories
Aug. 1 and 7.
