Seaforth Sea Lions win regional championship
Susan Hundertmark
For the second year in a row, the
Seaforth Sea Lions - this year with
a membership of 60 swimmers - has
won the regional championship.
After a summer of coming first at
every swim meet, including meets
held in Lucan, Mitchell and Exeter
with points ranging from 294 to
345, the Seaforth swim team won
Saturday's finals at the Seaforth
Lions pool with 395 points.
Second place was Lucan with 243
points and in third was Mitchell
with 206 points.
Other towns competing included
Stratford, Exeter, Clinton, Lucknow,
St. Marys and Kirkton.
"We're very happy," says coach
Julie Phillips, who adds the other
coaches are Jenny Phillips, Ashley
Coleman and Ashley Marion.
"The kids really improved this
year - you could tell the strokes and
the speed improved from the first
meet," she says.
All four say the team members,
whose numbers doubled from ' last
year, showed up for practices two to
three times a week with "crazy
amounts of energy"
They say improvements were also
made in the butterfly stroke, back -
crawl starts and flipturns.
The coaches attribute the large
number of Sea Lions members to
the pool renovations which occurred
.during the spring.

Red Eyes finish runners-up
Two local teams finished in the
top four at the final women's base-
ball tournament over the weekend
in Varna.
Seaforth's Red Eyes finished the
tournament as the A final run-
ners-up, losing ' to the Mitchell
Spitfires 14-9.
"We're pretty happy with the
results," said Marion Lansink, of
the Red Eyes on Monday.
"We had a bad first inning
where they scored 11 runs so we
had to make a comeback during
the rest of the game," she said.
The Red Eyes won their other
two gameg, beating the Dublin
Shamrocks 4-3 in their first game
and beating the Cromarty team
10-3 in their second game.
The Winthrop Rookies won the
B championship against the Varna
Vixens in a 12-8 final game.
Winthrop lost their first game 8-
6 against the Vixens, moving into
the B round but won again
against the Winthrop
Roadrunners 22-6 and the
Seaforth Stray Cats 16-5.
"It was an awesome tourna-
ment," said Amanda Van
Miltenberg, of the Winthrop
Rookies. "Everybody was on the
ball and we just kept getting bet-
ter."
Van Miltenberg said the
Rookies, which have only been
together as a team for three years,
lost all of their games the first
year but have been improving
ever since.
"Hopefully the A championship
will be reachable next year," she
said.
