With four new events and a fourth
day added to the usual three-day
event, the Seaforth Fall Fair is
growing this year.
"The fair is expanding into
Sunday this year," says Seaforth
Agricultural Society member Steve
Fritzley, who is helping to organize
a lawn tractor pull and a car show,
two new eventsoffered on Sunday,
Sept. 10 at 2 p.m.
As well, a junior ambassador pro-
gram is being offered for teenagers
going into Grade 9 this fall and a
miniature horse show will be
offered on Saturday at 1 p.m.
Anyone with a lawn tractor,
including children under 12 if
they're accompanied by an adult,
can enter the stock class of the lawn
tractor pull.
Lawn tractors must have func-
tioning brakes with the
grass -cutting deck
either disconnected or
removed and riders
must have a helmet
and shoes.
But, the numbers are
limited to 15-20 entries
so interested partici-
pants are asked to call
Steve Fritzley at 527-
0797 with a $5 entry
fee.
"It'll be first come,
first served," he says.
Along with the stock
class, a modified class
will be offered for lawn
tractor enthusiasts
across Ontario who
have modified their
garden tractors with
-four cylinder car
engines or motorcycle
engines.
"It's something differ-
ent and if it works,
we'll give it another try
next year," says
Fritzley.
While events at the
fair are usually free, a
$5 admission fee for
adults and $2 for chil-
dren 5-12 will be
charged to pay for
prizes for the lawn trac-
tor pull.
The car show, being
held at the same time
as the lawn tractor
pull, is being offered for
anyone with a vehicle
they want to display
from antiques to hot
rods.
While there is no entry fee to dis-
play a vehicle, spectators will be.
asked for a $5 admission
fee.
The junior ambas-
sador competition will
be held Saturday at
1:30 p.m. for teenagers
interested in gaining
some experience in pub-
lic speaking and being
interviewed.
"A few other fairs are
doing this and we want-
ed to give our younger
girls or chaps a chance
to try it. It's mainly for
the experience," says
organizer Gwen Good,
who adds that the idea
was current ambassador
Kora Bennett's.
While contestants in the fair
ambassador contest have individual
sponsors, Good is hoping to find
someone to sponsor the whole junior
ambassador event.
Junior ambassador
contestants will be
asked to give one to
two -minute speeches
on the fair and will be
interviewed by the
judges.
So far there . are two
entries.
Another first for the
Seaforth fair is . a
miniature horse show,
being organized by
Martha Mills, of
Sarnia and Jim and
Gene Baynham, who
raise miniature hors-
es in Seaforth.:
Gene Baynham, who
has helped to organize the minia-
ture horse show at the Clinton fair
for the last few years, says minia-
ture horses are rising in popularity
in Canada.
"They're big in the U.S. and there
are quite a lot of them around now
in Ontario. Last year, there was a
miniature horse show for the first
time at the CNE," she says.
Held on Saturday at 1 p.m., the
miniature horse show will have 17
classes from weanlings to senior
horses and including horses in hal-
ters and pulling carts.
Baynham is expecting entries
from across Ontario, including
Belleville, Guelph and Owen Sound.
Miniature horses in the show will
be 34 inches at the withers or short-
er and Baynham is hoping they will
be a good draw to the fair.
"They're very sweet little things.
There's something about them that
hooks you. People can come out and
watch the show and talk to the
horses and pet them," she says.
