Support for Communities in Bloom
overwhelming, say organizers
To the Editor,
A huge thank you to the residents and businesses
of Seaforth, Egmondville' and Harpurhey for. your
enthusiastic response to the Communities in Bloom
competition. Your interest, support and involvement
along with the help of the Huron East staff and elect-
ed officials was overwhelming.
No matter what the results of the competition. on
Sept. 20, in Brandon, Manitoba, we feel we are
already champions. Our community looks awesome
and we should all be proud of our efforts.
We are already planning for next year. Thanks
again to everyone.

I'm sorry to leave the rut I've been in
since the start of summer
From Page 4
casts I've ever heard, and met an effervescent cancer
survivor bent on improving the lives of others.
At ithe Goderich Signal -Star I was introduced to a
new level of community journalism, forced quickly to
become a better and more efficient reporter, and was
privileged to encounter Sarah Mann.
To tell .you how rich my experience has been this
summer and how thoroughly I have been blessed would
take far more than the 600 words allotted me here. I
might have to write an essay about it.
Suffice it to say that I'm extremely thankful to my
employers for the opportunity, and to you for reading
the words I've written, listened to those I have spoken,
and willingly answered the questions I have posed. -
If nothing else, I've learned this year that being in a
rut can be a good thing. Thanks for being part of the
journey.

Huron East pays $2,438 for repairs
to Egmondville Cemetery monuments
Susan Hundertmark
With no luck tracking down any
families connected to six aging mon-
uments requiringrepair, Huron
East paid the 2,438 bill for
Egmondville Cemetery.
Milton Dietz, chair of •the
Egmondville Cemetery Board,
appeared at council's Aug. 22 meet-
ing after sending a letter itemizing
the necessary repairs.
"The desire of the board is to
maintain the monuments in their
original state to preserve the her-
itage of the past. If monument
repairs were not completed, . they
would pose a potential risk to ceme-
tery board members," said the let-

• Dietz told council that since those
buried under the monuments died
150 years ago, relatives were hard
to find.
"I've contacted the family names
and haven't come up with .any rela-
tives," he said.
One monument had fallen over
and was lying in pieces while the
others were leaning at 45 degree
angles, he said.
Dietz said the six have all been
repaired and placed in concrete
foundations.
Huron East donates $500
towards gala weekend

Huron East will donate $500
towards the fifth gala weekend to
recruit doctors to the Huron -Perth
region, planned for Nov. 17-19.
Huron East donated $200 in 200. 3
but hasn't donated since.
"We were really obvious last year
not donating because every munici-
pality does. We've been obvious in
our absence the last couple of
years," said Seaforth Coun. Joe
Steffler.
"It's quite a do," remarked Mayor
Joe Seili of the weekend retreat
where resi Rents from every teach-
ing centre in Ontario are invited to
attend a dinner and a play at the
Stratford Festival.
"They take them out and wine
them and dine them," said McKillop
Coun. Sharon McClure.
"And, they tour local hospitals
and clinics," added Seili.
"It is well worthwhile and
brought a lot of doctors to the area,"
said Steffler, pointing out that 14
new physicians have chosen to
practice in the Huron Perth area, at
least in part because of the gala
weekend.
"Fourteen isn't a bad catch if you
go fishing," he said.
