Winning the trust of rural towns
is South West's LHIN's challenge
Susan Hundertmark
Winning the trust of Seaforth and other
rural communities served by the South
West LHIN (Local Health Integration
Network) will be one of its biggest
challenges.
That's the reaction from Seaforth-area
residents at one of the first community
forums scheduled by the South West
LHIN throughout the Huron -Perth region.
"We have a history of worrying about
hospital closures and amalgamations are
not quite working," said Bob Fisher, of
Egmondville on behalf of one of four

$50,000
grant. will
improve
medical
centre
Susan Hundertmark
A $50,000 provincial grant will
help to fund improvements at the
Seaforth Medical Centre.
Announced at a press conference
at the Seaforth Community
Hospital on Friday with Huron -
Bruce MPP Carol Mitchell in
attendance, the grant through the
Ministry of Agriculture and Food
and Rural Affairs will go towards
a pilot project that includes
computer upgrades for patient
records, an improved waiting room
and long-term asset planning.
"This project will enhance the
appeal of Seaforth as an attractive
location for the recruitment of
physicians," said Mitchell.
Ron Lavoie, chair of the Seaforth
Community Hospital Trust, said
the project developed around a
strategy to "create a circle of
revenue and services that is self -
sustainable in a rural
environment."
"In bringing the provincial
funding to Seaforth, they (the
provincial government) wanted to
see a model that can be rolled out
throughout Ontario," said Lavoie.
Key areas include the purchase
of paint and furniture that will
allow the waiting room at the
medical centre to be used for
public education, health seminars
and classes.
"The trick in the design will be
making the furniture very mobile
so that lectures and exercise
classes can be held there," he said.
As well, Lavoie plans to improve
the educational information
available in the waiting room,
possibly including a computer
