Carter wins bronze at national championships
Jeff Heuchert
The airline losing her lug-
gage wasn't the only first for
Carol Carter on her recent
trip to Regina, Sask., for the
Canadian Lawn Bowling
Championships.
The bronze medal her
team of four walked away
with was also a first for the
long-time Seaforth club
bowler and Mitchell resi-
dent, who's won gold and sil-
ver at the Championships in
the past.
"I have quite a story to tell
this year," jokes Carter upon
returning, adding that the
championships were no

During their round-
robin
oundrobin 3-2 win over
Costa Rica, Maxwell
scored. He did the
same in a 6-0 win
over a squad from
Minnesota.
But Maxwell's most
significant goal came
during the semi-
finals against Costa
Rica.
With one minute
left in the scoreless
match, Maxwell
found the back of the
net, scoring the win-
ner and propelling
the Spirits into the
finals.
"I was clutch," he
says with a large grin
on his face as he
remembers the goal.
Maxwell explains
that when entering
the tournament, the
Spirits purposely
walk in the park this year.
With victories against
Alberta, the Ontario B
team, Nova Scotia and
Quebec and close losses to
British Columbia, Manitoba
and Saskatchewan during
regular play, Carter's team
took on Saskatchewan
again, this time in the
bronze. medal game.
"At this level .there are so
many great bowlers you
never enter this competition
thinking it will be easy," she
says. "You just keep
focussed and keep trying
your best."
Along with Carole Fuller
and Jo Anne Bugler, who
bowl at the Exeter club and
Maureen Thompson, who
bowls in Seaforth, Carter's
team defeated
Saskatchewan 15-14.
However, the medal may
been the second most inter-
esting story to come from
her trip to Regina.
Carter's luggage, which
included her own - bowls,
went missing after her flight
from Toronto was delayed
two hours.
Arriving in Saskatchewan
on the Saturday afternoon,
Carter didn't receive her
luggage until the Monday
evening.
"I had to go power shop-
ping in .`Regina on .the
Sunday," says Carter, who
adds she had to play in
some borrowed clothes.

the three U-15 class-
es.
We wanted to be in
the top flight because
we worked hard (all
year) and we didn't
want to go there and
just win everything,"
he says.
Another memorable
was brutal. We
couldn't even run and
the ball would just
stop in the air and
drop," says Maxwell.
The rest of the
games he says were
fine. Maybe it was a
little hot at times,
but fine nonetheless.

"It (the trip) was
definitely worth it. I

was going to be like,
but our team played
well," says Maxwell,

scoring is coming

But luckily for her, the
bowls she had • to use were
the same weight as her own.
Nonetheless, Carter says
the championships were
"great fun and great bowl-
ing."
She says aside from some
light rain the weather was
great, albeit hot.
The bronze medal marks
the fifth Canadian champi-
onships for Carter that she's
returned from with a medal.
She previously won gold in
1999 and 2004 in fours and
2005 in pairs and a silver in
fours in 2000.
