Seaforth teen plays in international -soccer tournament
Jeff Heuchert
While his family may
have moved away
from the big city to a
small town three years
ago, Seaforth's Jade
Maxwell continues to
travel to the big city to
play soccer - and he
has found much suc-
cess there..
Playing in Kitchener,
with the U-15 Spirits
in the Elite Soccer
League, Maxwell, 15,
recently returned from
a trip to Blaine, Minn.,
where he competed in
the USA Soccer Cup.
Playing in a group
against squads from
Illinois, Minnesota,
Michigan and Costa
Rica, the Spirits fought
their way out of the
group stage and
through the quarter
and semi-finals, before
losing to a squad ,from
Norway -1 in over-
time in the finals.
"They tied the game
with five minutes left
in overtime and then
again in overtime"
recalls Maxwell sitting
outside his Church
Street home.
"It wasn't cool, but
they were a good
team."
Maxwell first started
playing soccer in house
league: in Stratford,
where he lived at the
time,
He continued to do so
after moving to
Sebringville, up until
he was nine years old,
"Then my dad decid-
ed to take me to the
Kitchener tryouts," he
explains.
It was for the Spirits
Maxwell would play
his next three seasons,
before switching to
play for North London
a decision he made
because they were
playing in a higher
league than Kitchener
at the time.
It was during the
regionals, which
Maxwell qualified for
when he was 13, that
he was scouted by one
of the North London
coaches who asked him
to join their team.
That year London
finished second in all
of Ontario.
However, the next
season Maxwell decid-
ed to take a break from
soccer all together.
""I was planning on
coming back, but then
I didn't. I just didn't
want to play," he
recalls.
But when he did, it
was as if he'd never
stopped.
Maxwell says he
decided to return to
Kitchener because he
wanted to play in the
Elite League again.
"It's not a hard
league," he says, quick-
ly noting though, "but
I've only got five or six
goals all year."
"I didn't start scoring
until I got back from
Minnesota," he adds.
It was at the USA
Soccer Cup that
Maxwell, as he says,
found his " scoring
touch.
