Papple seeks volunteers
for disaster response training
Jeff Heuebert
With a comprehensive list
of credentials already to her
name, Seaforth's Summer
Papple has added a few more,
recently being appointed
chair of the Huron County
Disaster Management team
and as a member of the
Ontario Zone Red Cross coun-
cil.'
The new positions enable
Papple to continue with her
work training both business-
es and individuals in disaster
response - which she has
already been doing fort he
better part of four years. t
Papple already holds he
position, of chair to the
Disaster Management team
for the entire region and sits
on the regional Red Cross
council and is a peer support
councillor.
According to a press release
issued by the Canadian Red
Cross, Papple will help pro-
vide volunteer training oppor-
tunities through mock disas-
ters, refresher activities at
meetings and guest speakers.
"The Red Cross has desig-
nated disaster management
as one of our major focus
areas," explains Papple dur-
ing a recent interview, adding
that the Red Cross has
already quite a few agree-
ments with Huron County
businesses, that are ready to
help, with either food or shel-
ter, if need be.
"We try and arrange a few
training activities at each
meeting," she adds, noting
that they hope to organize a
meeting for sometime in
September, which anyone can
attend.
Papple has witnessed first
hand the importance of hav-
ing a quick, efficient disaster
response plan in place. Along
with her husband Tyler, who
is also active with the Red
Cross, Papple spent 11 days
in Sudbury helping evacuees
of the Cree reserve of
Kashechewan.

"Through my roles I have
the ability to have a large
impact in helping those most
in need. and to see the posi-
tive effect Red Cross help has
on.people," she says.
Here in Huron County,
Papple says , the Red Cross is
looking for more individual
volunteers.
"We are looking for people
who have a desire to help
those in need and would like
to be involved in their own t
community," she says.
"Everyone's welcome. We're s
looking for a mixture of vol- a
unteers - from those who
would like to be trained to i
help in an emergency to those b
who are interested in taking r
a leadership role in planning e
ahead and ' preparing for S
managing the impact`of a dis- o
aster." 8
Papple adds that the Red
Cross already has quite a few w
volunteers from Seaforth, "
Exeter, Clinton and Goderich, a
but that they'd like to havegr
volunteers from all over the d
county. e
A separate press release bl

from the Red Cross states the
organization is currently
looking for volunteers who
are, interested in being
trained to help after a disas-
ter.
"Registering evacuees, dis-
tributing comfort kits and
blankets, setting up a shelter
. and working directly with
those effected," are activities
listed for volunteers in the
press release.
It also says they are looking
for anyone interested in giv-
ing personal emergency pre-
paredness workshops to busi-
nesses, non-profit organiza-
tions and the public.
Papple says they hope to.
have a Personal Disaster
Assistance program up and
running in Huron County by
the fall. The program is cur-
rently running in Stratford.
She says the program would
prepare individuals for Situa-
tions where the fire depart-
ment might call upon them to
help families meet their basic
needs, such as shelter, food or
clothing.
"And we would help them
hrough the first 72 hours
until other agencies could
tep in and take over," she
dds.
Papple encourages anyone
nterested in volunteering or
eing trained in disaster
esponse to contact her via
mail at
ummer. Papple@redcross. ca
r by phone at the office at 1-
77-528-8802.
"Disasters happen every -
here," points out Papple,
and through proper planning
nd preparedness we can
eatly minimize the impact
isasters have on everyone,
specially the most vulnera-
e."
Maloney considers running for mayor
From Page 1
Maloney.
`If a councillor disagrees
with the mayor, they are
chastised in front of the
whole council,' he said.
Maloney said he has 28
years' experience in munici-
pal politics in Hibbert,
Dublin, West Perth and
Huron East to offer ratepay-
ers in the position of mayor.
He adds he's been thinking
of running for mayor for the
past two years.
When asked what other
issues he's interested in pur-
suing as mayor, Maloney said
he doesn't have any.
«1 don't really have any big
vision - just doing the day-to-
day stuff as long as the
money's being spent equally
between the five wards. And,
I can't say that's not being
done now," he said.
Seili announced in April he
would run again for mayor of
Huron East.
