The following is the seventh in a series
of stories about Seaforth-area gardeners,
celebrating Seaforth's first year of partic-
ipation in the Communities in Bloom
competition.
She'll be the first to admit it.
"I can't sit still," says Susan Arts, . walking
through the large garden at her Harpurhey
Road home, "so I'm always rooting through
the mud."
"When it's quiet at six till eight (in the
morning) I'm outside just digging in the gar-
den, pulling weeds," she says.
"I do more gardening than housework," adds
Arts, whose home was designed by her hus-
band Zbny.
Following her garden from the front yard
into the back, walking underneath a large
wooden arbour, you quickly realize it's a
house still occupied with several kids.
With colourful flowers, and a uniquely -con-
structed rocking bench and dog house wrap-
ping around the back of their yard, the middle
is taken up with a playground, trampoline,
tether ball pole and pool.
"It's definitely a playground before garden,"
she says of her backyard, "But my playground
is my garden."
The Arts have been living at their house
now for nine years, and in that time, Arts
says she's made many changes to her garden,
most significantly when they put in the pool
and she lost a large garden directly behind
the house.
"It was painful," recalls Arts, "because it got
part shade. The perennials I had did really
well back there."

"I don't really have a lot of shade now and
hostas are my favourite. They'll grow, but you'
just really have to water them," she adds.
Arts says she prefers perennials, which is
why hostas, black-eyed suzies and cone flow-
ers can be spotted throughout her garden.
But there are some pots of annuals around
the pool and some geraniums, impatiens,
potato vines and pansies mixed in around as
well.
As for if she's stylized her garden after any
particular kind, she says not really "I just
plant whatever will grow. I just like colour
everywhere."
While Arts will spend a couple hours a day
working in her garden, she very rarely spends
time watering.
"I don't go around watering. Whatever
grows grows, whatever doesn't - it's on its
own."
But what does grow, Arts is very specific
about.
"I don't like it looking overgrown. 1 like
when you can see space between. them (flow-
ers)."
"It just looks so nice. You don't have to do a
lot of work to make it look good," she says.
Amongst the garden is some of her husband
Tony's work, including the large dog house
and arbour.
Arts has also added patio lights and eight
bird houses that run along the top of their
back fence.
Standing in her front yard, looking over her
garden, Arts says she's happy with how
things look right now, but adds it won't be
long before she finds something else in her
garden to keep her busy during those early
mornings.
"Like my twin says, ft's my sanity."
