News Huron East watches webcast of seniors' website launch by Tourism Minister in Saugeen Shores Jeff Heuchert Gathered inside Huron East town hall to watch a live webcast, Mayor Joe Seili, Clerk -Administrator Jack McLachlan and Linda Finkbeiner were on -hand last Friday for the launch of a new seniors' website. Provincial Minister of Tourism and Minister responsible for seniors Jim Bradley, was in Saugeen Shores to launch the site, which is geared towards providing seniors with quick access to information on ser- vices in their areas. The launch, which was also attended by Huron -Bruce MPP Carol Mitchell, was broadcast via webcast to each of the 21 communi- ties that will be featured on the new website, including Huron East in the near future. The website can now be accessed at seniorsinfo.ca "I am pleased to be launching this website," said Minister Bradley. "I'm delighted how it makes so much information accessible - a one- stop, so to speak, for needs." With each community listed on the website, users can search through a list of ser- vices available in that area, including care facilities, finances and pension, housing and safety and security. In all, the website has 21 searchable areas. The website is the result of a collaborative effort between all three levels of government, said Bradley, adding that it comes at a time when senior population in Ontario is continu- Canada's seniors - and that number. all your is expected to double by 2028. Roughly 17 per cent of those 1.5 million seniors currently live in Huron County. And, according to Bradley, the website is also launching at a time when seniors are becoming more com- fortable using the internet. "Seniors are the fastest growing num- ber on the internet - they are becoming more tech -savvy and using the internet more and more," he said. Tourism Minister. According to govern- Jim Bradley ment statistics, Ontario is home to nearly 1.5 million seniors - 40 per cent of seniors coul tion. From these discussions came the seniors portal website in 2003. Bradley described . the newly launched website as a "much enhanced" version of its 2003 prede- cessor. "There is no such service that is just three clicks away," he said. Huron East is one of less than 20 municipalities that received a $5,000 grant by the Ministry of Social Services' Seniors' Directorate to join the Senior's Info web page. Finkbeiner, who has assisted in gathering information to be used on the website, said in an interview after the webcast she expects Huron. East will be added to the website's database by the mid-September. She adds that although the web- site will only list Huron East, she is adding services from all across Huron County and government agencies. "I probably have around 1000 con- tacts already," she estimated. Finkbeiner added that for those without a computer, the "YOUR RENOVATION AND HOME PECIALI TS!" Nose to nose with a skunk not my idea of camping fun From Page 4 -ding, would we be heading home that night in a stinky cloud of skunk spray? Luckily, he veered off again and headed out into the night. During our stay at the campground, we got used to the almost tame skunks and avoiding them during their nightly rambles. But, I hope I never come nose to nose with one ever again.
