Since moving into their John Street home nearly five years ago, after two previous moves in town, Helen McNaughton has finally cre- ated the garden she wants, and this time she intends on keeping it. However, between work and fami- ly, Helen, a long-time Horticultural Society member and custodian for Huron East, says she rarely spends more than two to three hours a week with her garden - and when she does, she's usually working in it. "Other people will look at • it and think it looks good. I look at it and see the things that need to be done." Helen lives at the house, which is located on the corner of John and Sparling Streets, with her husband Bob, whom she says has yet to catch the gardening bug like herself. After moving in, Helen says she took it upon herself to create the garden: she wanted. "Each time I move I just dig up some roots and start again at the next place," she says. "There was just your basic land- scaping (when we arrived). I added quite a few gardens all the way around (the house), extended some and shaped them." Stylized after an English country garden, the McNaughton's garden winds its way on both sides of the house to the backyard, where it is accented by a small pond, vegetable garden and uniquely -designed shed. On both sides of the house are two large arbours, covered in vines. "I don't like things pruned and shaped in a formal way," she says, "I want a more relaxed feel." "We get people admiring the shed," she points out, "and a lot of people question us about the vines that are growing on the arbour." While Helen says she has no idea how many different kinds of flowers she's planted over the years, she says she really enjoys the spring because of the bulbs she gets to plant, including tulips and daffodils. In the summer she says she likes a mix of perennials, including iris, lupins, phlox and what she calls, "false sun flowers." "I pay equal attention to all of them. I think they all bring some- thing to accent the garden and land- scape," she says. In her vegetable garden, Helen grows tomatoes, beans, beets and swiss chard. She also has asparagus growing on the side of the house. .At first glance, just walking through the McNaughton's garden, you might miss many of the small - sometimes unusual - items that Helen has purchased along the way and scattered throughout her gar- den.
