Huron Expositor, 2006-08-16, Page 3News The Huron Expositor • August 16, 2006 Page 3 Patients already coming in, says Verberne From Page 1 residents to nominate themselves as orphan patients. Information from the nomination process will help those involved with the family health team to determine what type of skills are needed as the FHT is formed. A board of directors. and clinical advisory team (the latter headed by Dr, Dan Rooyakkers) will also be established, Laviolette said in an interview later in the evening. According to Dr. Rooyakkers, there are currently 8,000 charts at the Seaforth medical clinic belonging to patients who don't have a family doctor. Of that number, how- ever, some have not vis- ited the clinic in two to three years, and may have already found a• new family doctor, he said. For that rea- son, it's difficult to say at this point exactly how many orphan patients exist in the Seaforth area. Rooyakkers said he hopes the FHT will be up and running by late fall, although a nurse practitioner has already been hired and has begun to see patients. The stream of patients coming in has been steady thus far, said nurse prac- titioner Cate Verberne, the FHT's first employee. Office staff have been con- tacting known orphan patients, although it is expected that many more will nominate them- selves in the near future. Verberne is thoroughly pleased to be part of the FHT at this early stage, how- ever. "I did a clinical rota- tion in Seaforth last year, with Dr. Rooyakkers and all the staff in the (Seaforth) clinic, and I loved it," she said. "I had a great time. Everyone was really nice and I thought it would be the ideal place to work, so I was really lucky to get my job. Physician recruiter Gwen Devereaux wrote the initial proposal for the FHT and attended the August 8 gathering. "I've been in physician. recruiting for a few years, and (I can) see our numbers just div- ing," she said. "We need to provide health service for our people." Huron East mayor Joe Seili, a member of the FHT steering commit- tee, echoed that senti- ment.
