Immune systems and English skills improve during
six-week visit by Belarussian children
From Page 6
"Some of the girls are asking me so many ques-
tions - what it this, what is that, how do you say
it in English?" he says with the exasperation of a
teenaged boy.
Alina Piguleuskaya, who is staying for the first
time with Evelyn and Henry Stam, of Winthrop,
is the girl who had the finger injury.
"Sasha came to interpret at the hospital and
he did very well," says Evelyn of the incident.
Because it's her first trip out of Belarus,
Alina's weakened immune system, was easy to
spot with pale skin, sores that were slow to heal
and frequent nose bleeds when she first arrived
in Canada.
But, since she's been eating plenty of fruit and
vegetables, including the favourites of bananas,
watermelon and corn on the cob, for the past six
weeks, Alina's health has improved.
"You can tell the difference. And, we're not see-
ing nose deeds anymore," says Evelyn.
Communication was a challenge throughout
the trip as well since Alina's English was not
extensive. But, Evelyn says she's happy with
Alina's willingness to attempt words in English
and imagines Alina's English will be much better
if she returns next year.
Nancy and Kevin Kale, of RR Seaforth, hosted
12 -year-old Kristina Furs for the first time this
year as well and also found communication a lit-
tle challenging.
"Kristina can read and write better than she
can speak English but the Russian/English dic-
tionary has been very helpful. We also used a lot
of sign language initially," says Nancy.
But, as the. trip draws to an end, they are hav-
ing an easier time understanding each other and
Nancy says it's been interesting finding out
about life in Belarus.
Kristina lives in the small village of
Ladozhayla, about 100 km from Gomel where
her family moved to be able to grow their own
food, including a couple of pigs, and be more self-
sufficient:
Kristina lists lasagna and pizza as some of her
favourite foods in Canada and Nancy says she'll
be sending home some of the foods not readily
available in Belarus.
"Kristina's been eating very well. She might
have put on a few pounds," she says.
Larry and Laurie Dolmage say their
Belarussian guest Olga Filinskaya, 12, of Gomel,
has fit into the family beautifully with their two
daughters Sarah, 11 and Lindsay, 14.
"She's quite fluent in English and she's very
lovely. She's just another part of the family," says
Laurie.
The Dolmages have been taking Olga on vari-
ous adventures camping, going to the beach,
fishing and learning to drive an Argo along the
Bayfield River.
"We saw a beaver, some deer and three wild
turkeys," says Larry.
"It was exciting to
catch a fish," says
Olga.
