Hallman avoids serious injury through 14 years of competition
From Page 16
"It's the only buckle I've
got," he says, referring to
the belt buckle that is tradi-
tionally awarded to champi-
onship winners.
For winning, Hallman also
earned $1,300.
"That's not too bad," he
notes for three days of com-
petition.
Hallman was first intro-
duced to bull riding by his
uncle Steve, who competed
on rodeo circuits, and prac-
tised at a farm in Rockwood,
just north of Guelph.
"I went to the farm and
just got on a horse with
some other kids," Hallman
says, recalling his first expe-
rience.
Not able to recall a specific
moment when he realized
he was getting the hang of
things, Hallman says "I
would buck off a bunch of'
horses, then one day I rode
one and I got in time with
it," which, according to
Hallman is the key to riding
saddle -back.
As for . bull riding,
Hallman says the technique
is considerably simpler.
"When it comes to bull rid-
ing you just hold on," he
says. "You need to have
strong arms to hold on, good
leg strength to squeeze the
bull and balance to contra-
dict any move he makes," he
explains.
"This is a physically
demanding sport," he adds.
"But it's a different kind of
sport. It's one of the only
sports where you pay (to
compete) without a guaran-
tee of a pay cheque."
Depending on the size of a
•
rodeo and number of riders
the purse size varies, says
Hallman, who adds that
usually the top four in each
category will earn a piece of
the purse.
•
Like other sports,
Hallman is at risk of injury
each time he competes.
Luckily however, aside from
a broken foot suffered two
years ago, when the bull he
was riding fell on him, he
has stayed relatively
healthy.
"That's the only real injury
I've had. I've been knocked
funny a few times, but that's
the only time I had to miss a
few rodeos," he says.
"I've seen guys get hit
good, and I don't know why
it hasn't happened to me,"
he adds.
"But I'm not going to com-
plain."
