Five local golfers are just
one tournament away from
earning a trip to Florida
next summer. _
Robyn and Paul . Doig, Jim
Dick, Jade Maxwell and
Curtis Bennett, of Seaforth,-
and Dan Schenk, of Dublin,
have all advanced to the
final stage of qualifying
tournaments, for the oppor-
tunity to advance to the
Optimist International
Junior Golf Championships
next summer..
The week-long event,
which draws around 650
golfers from around the
world each year is held at
the PGA National Resort in
Palm Beach Gardens,
Florida.
Just to appear at the
Ingersoll tournament, which
runs from Aug. 14-15,
golfers had to compete at
qualifiers in Clinton and St.
Marys.
• Robyn Doig, 14, is compet-
ing in the 14-15 age group,
and says she has been, and
will continue to practise,
leading up to the Ingersoll
tournament - especially
after what she calls, some
average play in Clinton.
"Hopefully I'll play a lot
better and that will be good
enough (to qualify for
Florida)," she says.
One advantage on her side
is that she's gotten to watch

needs to play to qualify for
the Florida tournament,
after her 11 -year-old brother
Paul qualified last summer,
and just recently returned
from Florida, after placing
26th out of 73 in his age
group.
Yet, even after having suc-
cess in Florida, and having
finishing seventh at
Ingersoll last year, Paul,
who will be competing in
the 10-11 age group, says he
is still nervous about the
upcoming tournament.
But at the same time, he
says he is probably more
confident than he was head -

"I know heading in that
the competition is going to
be stiff," he says. "Now I
know, how good I have to
play (to qualify)."
Doig, who is the youngest
of the local golfers compet-
ing in Ingersoll, adds that
he has been practising on
his chipping and thinks he
can qualify again.
Eighteen -year-old Jim
Dick, the oldest of the local
competitors, will be compet-
ing in the 16-18 age group.
In both Clinton and St.
Marys, Dick finished in the
top 10 and he says he's hop-
ing for similar results in

"I think I can win,"
he says. "I've been play-
ing well lately, so if
everything goes well, I
should be in the top five
or better."
Like most of the
competitors, 15 -year-old
Jade Maxwell, is expect-
ing nerves to be a factor
early on, but says he
expects he'll be fine once
a few holes are behind
him.
"I just want to go out
there and have a good time,"
he says, adding that while
he would be happy with a
top 20 finish, "A top 10
would be better."
At 17, Curtis Bennett is
the second oldest of the local
golfers competing in
Ingersoll.
While he handled qualify-
ing for Ingersoll smoothly,
Bennett almost missed out
on the opportunity to do so.
