Engineer recommends
assessments on county bridges
Bob Montgomery
MEM
Huron County engi-
neer Don Pletch says
angther assessment
of the condition of the
county's bridges
would be helpful in
managing county
assets.
Pletch says an
assessment was done
a few years ago after
a bridge on Highway
81 in the south end of
Huron
c o l -
lapsed.
But he
says
they

since
found

assess-
ment.
"Reparing
old bridges
is like fix-
ing up an
old house,"
Pletch told
council,
"Once you
take off a
layer and
look at it
sometimes you find
more than what was
originally anticipat-
ed."
Pletch says getting
an accurrate assess-
ment would help in
budgeting for repairs
and maintenance.
Pletch says the
study could cost as
much as $10,000 but
he says the total
value of the county's
bridges is as much as
$150 million.

County conducting
facility review
.,Bob Montgomery
Huron County is currently conducting a facilities
review that will hopefully result in more efficient use
of county resources.
County engineer, Don Pletch says at this time
there is excess capacity in some buildings while oth-
ers are seriously over -crowded.
Pletch says one building that's badly over -crowded
is the courthouse building in Goderich and he says
the court system is asking for more room than it
already has and that's putting more pressure on
other county departments.
Pletch says the review should help them consoli-
date departments and that should improve efficien-
cy.
