St. Columban
soccer season ends
for all but one team
Jeff Heuchert
As July came to an end, so did all
but one of the St. Columban soccer
teams' seasons.
The U18 men's squad is preparing
for their year-end playoffs, which
begin next Tuesday with their
opening round-robin match h with
Clinton, Aug. 8.
Brussels and Goderich Silver
round -out their group for the round
robin stage.
Coach Carl Bolton says his team
finished the regular season at .500,
but expects his team to make some
noise in the playoffs.
"We look forward to a long run in
the playoffs," he gays. "We=have a
well-balanced :offence," he adds,
noting that 11 different players
scored during the regular season.
The U18 boys have already played
each of their round-robin opponents
twice this year.
Versus Blyth, the U 18's have won
both meetings, while they lost both
matches to Clinton and tied both
against Brussels.
"They're a well -coached team,"
says Bolton of the Clinton squad.
"But I'm confident we can get past
Brussels and Blyth and get
through," he adds.
Frustration was the name of the
game for St. Columban's two girls
U15 squads, as both teams' seasons
came to an end last week.
Team 1 of the U15 girls lost in the
semi-finals of the year-end playoffs
to Blyth, in a game coach Frank
Flanagan says was tough to
swallow.
"We lost in a shootout 5-4," he
says, "and our player's shot hit the
crossbar," he adds.
Flanagan says his team was up in
the game 2-0, before allowing one
late goal at the end of each hdlf.
However, Team 1 of the U15 girls
had an incredible regular season,
finishing 8-1-1.
"They played their hearts out,"
Flanagan says.
"It was a• devastating loss," ;he.•
says of the semi-finals, "but they
should hold their heads high."
After , an undefeated regular
season, Team 2 of the U15 girls
could not keep the streak alive in:.
the playoffs, as they lost three
straight to be eliminated in the
round-robin stage.
Coach Pat Flanagan says` the
situation wasn't helped by the fact
that one of his star players, Carolyn
Murray, was not on the field, due to
a broken ankle suffered while
playing four weeks ago.
And, as is the nature during the
summer, many of the team's players
could not attend all of the games,
leaving the bench short handed.
"But we were in them all,"
Flanagan says. "Our girls worked -
as hard as they could. We had a
great season."
Tarn 2 of the St. Columban U15
boys advanced to the semi-finals of
their playoffs last week, before
losing to the other_St. Columban
U15 boys team 10-1.
