Heritage committee plans to beIn
designating Brussels home
Susan Hundertmark
Charles Hoy is hoping that by designating
his own heritage home in
Brussels, he'll encourage
others in his town to take
the same step.
The Huron East heritage
advisory committee is up
and running again after a
two-year lull when the com-
mittee lost a number of its
members.
Hoy, the chair of the her-
itage committee, says going
through the designation
process himself will allow
the committee to document
the steps and share the
information with other own-
ers 'of heritage buildings in
the municipality.
"Right now, it's mainly
Seaforth that has the designations and I'm
really hoping this will help encourage people
to consider doing it outside of Seaforth," he
says.

He adds that it's been
about 20 years since anyone
has designated a building
in Seaforth so the process
hasn't been experienced for
awhile.
Hoy, along with his wife
Alison Wainwright, owns
what's now known as the
Leckie -Hoy house, a Queen
Anne Revival house built by
Brussels' first reeve, John
A. Leckie.
Leckie, who established
the first grain and produce
dealership in Brussels, was
influential in having a rail-
way line built through
Brussels and having a
Carnegie library built in the
village..
Architectural features of the
house include a tower, a verandah,
..fan -shaped corner brackets and a
variety of windows, including sever-
al made of stained glass.
Hoy says he and his wife are in
the process of writing the house's
history and its distinguishing fea-
tures to prepare for the designation
process.
"It will be a learning experi-
ence for us," he says.
Hoy adds he hopes to rid peo-
ple of their fears of designating their
property.
"A lot of people have fears like
they won't be able to do anything to
their property and they won't be
able to resell it if it's designated," he
says, adding those fears are
ungrounded.
"In a lot of cases, it's beneficial
for the homeowner because the com-
mittee can advise the homeowner
about how to best preserve their
house," he says.
At the same time, the heritage
committee is creating a registry
about buildings in Huron East that
are already designated.
The registry is hoped to be
near completion and at least partial-
ly on-line on the Huron East website
by the end of August.
"We're hoping to include
addresses and photos so if people
want to take a drive, they can take a
look at the homes," says Hoy.
"There are a lot of historical
homes throughout Huron East that
are fine examples of various kinds of
architecture," he says.
Hoy says it's great to have the
heritage committee active again.
"We want to be there for people
with heritage homes, whether
they're designated or not," he says.
