Communities in Bloom almost
outgrown its $15,000 budget
Susan Hundertmark
The Seaforth Communities in Bloom com-
mittee has so far spent $13,595.38 of its
$15,000 budget, Huron East council was told
at its July 18 meeting.
Bridge boxes at three bridges in
Egmondville and Seaforth have cost a total of
$5,449.92, work at the east entrance sign has
cost $3,616.59 and Communities in Bloom
magnets given out to ratepayers have cost
$2,449.87.
"The committee didn't realize how poor the
conditions of the plantings around the east
entrance sign were. There were burdocks and
thistle and it all had to be ripped up. A
groundhog had even made its home there,"
said Deputy -Clerk Brad Knight.
Other costs include $347.49 for flyers
advertising e -waste recycling, $431.47 for
hats and aprons advertising the competition,
$698 for miscellaneous plants and fertilizers
and $260 for additional boxes.
The costs don't reflect plants purchased by
the Seaforth Horticultural Society or their
members and labour costs for watering.
Deputy -Clerk Brad Knight told council he's
still anticipating the costs of accommodating
the judges and providing hospitality for them
when they're in town and the costs of travel-
ling to Brandon, Man. for the national
awards in mid-September.
"Petrolia has asked us to be out there with
them and we think it's important too," said
Knight, adding each community competing
puts up display boards at the event.
The two Communities in Bloom judges will
be in Seaforth Aug. 18 and 19.
Huron East's taxes still among
lowest in Huron County
McKillop, Grey and Tuckersmith still have
the lowest taxes in Huron County.
But, Brussels dropped from fourth lowest to
14th after Huron East reconfigured how it
shares its policing costs, council learned at its
July 18 meeting.
"It impacted Brussels
the most because of its rel-
atively small assessment
base," said Deputy -Clerk
Brad Knight.
In the 2006 budget,
policing costs changed
from $90 to $150 a house-
hold in the four rural
wards, dropping from $360
to $262 per household in
Seaforth.

McLean
Knight- pointed out that the base cost for
policing only rose $30,000 and if the $25,000
raised for Brussels' water system was
removed, Brussels would drop to ninth in the
county.
Before amalgamation, Brussels was in 19th
place in the county.
Seaforth's position has improved from 22nd
to 20th in the county since Morris-
Turnberry's taxes are now higher than
Seaforth's. .
Before amalgamation, Seaforth was 25th
out of 26 municipalities (or second highest in
taxes).
Knight also pointed out that without the
$130,000 levied for Seaforth's sewage system,
Seaforth would be . 12th in the county.

Street resident
complains of racing cars
McLachlan
motorists cutting across
the lawn of a McLean Street resi-
dence in Seaforth were the cause of
a complaint to Huron East council
at the July 18 council meeting.
.Leta McCowan wrote to council
asking for some help with motorists
who speed up the hill on Isabella
Street and then miss the sharp cor-
ner at McLean,...only to end up on
her lawn.
"Some people may not know it is
such a sharp corner but some drive
too fast and see how fast they can
go around the corner. They end up
cutting across our lawn and coming
very close to the house and our
front steps," said her letter.
She said in some instances both
cars and snowmobiles have gone
through the back of her property.
Clerk -Administrator Jack
McLachlan said Public Works
rararrirsrrrf
Coordinator Barry Mills recom-
mended a checkerboard sign at the
end of McLean.
"Hopefully that will correct it and
if not, we'll need to try something
else," he said.
Vanastra gates price •
Huron East has received one esti-
mate from a masonry company in
Lucknow to repair the Vanastra
gates.
But, Clerk -Administrator Jack
McLachlan said more estimates are
expected in the coming week from
other stone workers.
"I'd like to hold it up to next meet-
ing because I got calls from other
people who want to take a look at
it," he said.
'Mayor Joe Seili said he'd like to
set a time limit on the job and
decide on a price at the next meet-
ing. •
