Huron corn will be used first at ethanol

seven days a week, would use more corn
than can be grown in Ontario and will
inevitably have to utilize U.S. corn.
He said it makes more business sense to
;buy all that's available in Huron County
as it has the largest corn supply in
Ontario.
"I can say unequivocally we will buy
local corn first, and we always will."
Baker said the company will be buying
directly from farmers for the first time
after severing their relationship with a
purchasing agent. Around 200 have
already signed up.
When asked if there was anything that
could change the company's mind about
locating in Hensall, Baker said no adding,
"We may have our minds changed for 11/3 if
there's no water."
He said water is the biggest issue to deal
with, both the 2000. cubic metres coming
in and the approximately 500 cubic metres
of non -contact cooling water discharged
daily.
"If we don't have any place to put that
then of course that's a deal breaker."
The effluent is said to be relatively
clean, as nothing is added, but evaporation
causes higher concentrations of the conta-
minants that came in with it, to a multiple
of four.
The plant will cost $120 million, with
$40 million being spent each year in the
community and surrounding areas.
'=We tend to spend the money in the local
community because it makes great sense
to do it," said Baker.
"We will be a source of new tax revenue
in the community," added Baker, joking he
didn't want to say too significant with
council in the room.
He said council made it clear GreenField
will be paying their fair share of a water-
line from Exeter.
"We want to be here pretty bad," he said,

adding each party will say how much they
would like to see contributed and come to
an agreement.
"I'm optimistic we can do that."
Baker also answered a concern that pay-
ing only the difference in the waterline
would amount to a free ride for the compa-
ny.
"That's exactlywhat your mayor and
council's told us. We've received the mes-
sage loud and clear."
Dowson added council is adamant the
village won't pay any more than if they did
it themselves.
"The municipality did not offer any
bonuses to come here...Earl (Wagner),
Bliss (Baker) and Carol (Mitchell) were
the ones that have got this here," he said.
Huron -Bruce MPP 'Mitchell was touted
as a driving force behind bringing the
plant to Hensall, Baker saying she
dragged him by his ear to the area and is.
working to close any gaps.
"I can't say enough abut what she's
done."
The Ontario Ethanol Growth Fund,
which will assist companies if ethanol
prices go too low is also according to
Baker, "a big part of why we're here."
The plant is planned for the north side
of the lot, located off of Mill
Street, to create a buffer zone
for residents.
Road widening of Highway 4
and a new road coming into
the lot off the highway are
proposed to keep the approxi-
mately 50-60 trucks a day out
of the village.
The property is already
zoned general industrial and
is consistent with the
Bluewater official plan. Baker
says all that's left is a few zon-
ing amendments.

tonnes per day of corn used.
Studies will be done to ensure it meets
or exceeds all Ministry of Environment
(MOE) standards on air quality noise,
water and traffic.
"We should not have any 'odour issues
here," said Baker.
He said the building's stacks release
steam and new technology called thermal
oxidizers, not employed in the older
Chatham plant, would burn off odour.
Baker said rumours it takes more ener-
gy to make ethanol than comes from it are
untrue and 50 per cent more energy is
gained. He said the future will only get
better, as regulations requiring five per
cent of all gas in Ontario be ethanol will be
in place by 2007.
Although currently more expensive to
produce than gas, prices of oil extraction
are going up and ethanol production costs
decreasing.
"We're crossing paths very soon," said
Baker, adding the days of fighting the oil
industry are over.
He assured the crowd safety was a top
priority, with 24 hour security, a sealed
perimeter and strict regulations.
