A map of the proposed GreenField ethanol plant coming to Hensall. "
Higher corn prices, 40 jobs
cited benefits of ethanol plant -
Possible benefits of the
ethanol plant coming to
Hensall were discussed at a
recent meeting in the village.
They include:
• Higher corn prices
"Experience has told us
that a plant will boost the
local basis for corn by at least
10 -cents per bushel. Our
analysis shows us that the
increase to the local basis
could be higher than 10
cents," states information on
the GreenField Hensall web-
site.
Baker says it is in nobody's
interest to have corn prices
stay low because "If you guys
aren't growing corn we're out
of business."
Wagner foresees a swing
from wheat to corn acres,
which will get rid of the "phe-
nomenal" cost of exporting.
• Jobs
Permanent jobs once the
plant is operational will total
40, with spinoff jobs created
in trucking and maintenance.
Construction, which is set
to begin this fall, will create
150 jobs lasting about 18
months.
Baker says•work will be
available to all, with an
emphasis on local outsourc-
ing.
• Money to the community
Baker says the .120 million
investment, new jobs and 40
million spent each year
"tends to add value to the
community, period." :-
He points to increased sales
for local stores and business-
es as new money flows
through the community.
• Railway
Baker says the company
could ship grain, oil and dry
distillers grain on the rail
line.
GreenField entered into •a
confidentiality agreement
with the railway, but says
they were assured the rail
will be viable for the next 50
years, staying operational
and at least in the same con-
, dition, slowly getting better.
"My sense is we're not going
to see a major upgrade of that
railway," he says.
U-HauI truck

22 from the Great Canadian

Tractor pullers' association puts
on 'heck of a show,' says organizer

dealerships who lent equipment for the event.
"Anyone who wants to help volunteer, we
could use more volunteers for next year," he
says, adding he hopes to get permission to
hold the event again.
"Knock on wood, we can do this again. I
don't see why we can't keep changing things
so it can be a different pull next year," says
Fritzley, adding the committee has given. it
the go-ahead for next year.
"We wanted to put a pull on to have some-
thing different for people to see," he says.
The Agricultural Society also made a dona-
tion to the foodbank after the tractor pull.
